Lindsey racing manual boost controller

My car had been fitted with a Lindsey racing perforamcne kit by the previous owner, shortly before I bought it, which comprised of a Dual port wastegate, new neoprene vacuum hoses, new chipsets and a manual boost controller with a knob mounted under the dashboard.

The question is, how much twiddling of the knob (ooh er missus[8|]) equates to how much boost? I have emailed LR, but not yet had a response.

I know that someone will tell me to get an accurate mixture/boost gauge, which I acknowledge I need to do, but i was just wondering if anyone else had something similar, Promax etc?

With a refreshed head and new h/gasket, I obviously want to avail myself of as many pounds per square inch as possible - well it'd be rude not to.....[:D]

I'd check with Promax as I believe they are the resellers of LR stuff in the UK. That is a nice little list of mods by the way, but be careful with yer knob before you know what you're doing with it. You don't want something to blow and for it to fall off now do you.[:D]

Get a boost gauge Nick [:D][:D]

Bear in mind your car will be mapped for a certain level of boost - beyond that you will run the risk of going lean. I'd leave it where it is

With an AFM and chips you don't have much flexibility - of course you could get a Vitesse MAF.... [;)]

La la la la la - not listening....... must not spend any more money on upgrades.......[8|]

Mind you, with a refreshed head and new h/g, it might be rude not to.....?![:D]

Honestly those knobs are not a highly calibrated piece of kit where one rotation equals 1 psi for every car, they are all different depending on the car it's fitted to and they are not linear in adjustment. Mine would move about 1psi for two turns at low boost but once you got around 15psi, then a 1/4 turn would take it to 16psi []

They also vary depending on weather conditions. One day you will be at 15psi, the next day it is 10 degrees cooler and you could be at 17psi so you really need a secondary gauge to keep an eye on it.

Circa £50 for a gauge versus a dangerously lean engine and a blown headgasket (or worse [])

Increasing boost means more air is introduced. This will lean out the mixture unless it is automatically enriched accordingly.

I havent taken time to study the add ons that prevent this but I`m sure someone will confirm what you need. Personally I`d find an optimum and stick to it BUT an AFR meter would be in my sight line if I modded the engine for the ambient air can make a difference when you`re on the limit ie; a very hot dry day as against a nice cool humid day, especially on track where you are maxing it out all the time.

New HG or not if you increase boost without correcting fuelling you will break something, or best case something will be damaged and break some way down the line. Fact.

If I recall correctly when I adjusted mine from 0.75 bar boost to a shade over 1 bar it was approx 2.5 turns - it's difficult to tell because the castellated interlocking teeth are quite course so if you aim for 1 turn you have to settle for 1 and a bit - or just under 1. To set the boost I shang-hi'd a mate to sit in the passenger seat and log max boost, turned the knob about 1/4 of a turn and repeated the run so the boost crept up and didn't overshoot. By not achieving the mapped boost you are running rich so are safe.

As has been said before, get a boost gauge. However i've found my in-dash gauge to be very accurate but the scale is not graduated very fine which makes accurate adjustments difficult.

Contrary to what Paul has said i've found my MBC to be very good at regulating boost. I hit and maintain the same max boost pressure in every gear whatever the outside temp. I've never had any boost spikes or fluctuations in boost. I've found the MBC to be an excellent boost controller and safe as it bleeds boost as revs rise. However i'm looking over at the Apexi AVCR EBC that has been on my side-board for about three months now and feel I really really need to get it installed.

I certainly found the MBC to be satisfactory - thaty said I plan to get an EBC is the near future. The Promax boys warned me not to fiddle with the MBC myself , might be worth talking to them or if you are close by them paying them a visit.

Same here. I use a MBC in DP mode with a Tial 38mm (1.0 bar spring) and it works troublefree.
However I must say turbo spool up was quicker with the same WG used in SP mode with an accuboost. I believe using a WG in DP mode can be considered a genuine upgrade when using a softer spring, i.e. 0.8 bar or less.

Quick question, have been in correspondance with Lindsay Racing about getting the 300rwhp package. Interests me as it comes with 4" exhaust (want a meatier exhaust note). Anybody got this setup on their turbo? With the weak dollar its great value, looking at $2000 including shipping. Wish to know if it cool on uk pump fuel and how loud is the exhaust, and also whats the go in this package like (want to keep up with my pals sapphire cossie stage 1 and my other mates tuned volvo T5, thay both approaching 300bhp, we do 1/4 mile runs on the airstrip up here, but i use car on the road mostly). Also is it ok for emissions tests, any opinions welcome, thanks all.

The exhaust will definately be very loud and meaty. I have only heard one car in the UK with a 4" exhaust and that is MarkK's 400bhp monster [8D], if you are very lucky he may be bringing it to Frontrunner this weekend.

The 300rwhp kit is basically the same as most level2 kits here in the UK plus that exhaust, but I sincerely doubt it will reach 300rwhp. You will reach over 300bhp at the flywheel if you run at 18psi but that will only be equivalent to circa 260-270rwhp. US power figures are incredibly optimistic [&o]

Talking of EBC's what is the general concensus on which is best for our vehicles?

Apexi, Greddy, etc?

Any firm fav's or recommendations?

As now I have my car back I have the buying bug back (should resist!!!![])

I have the Greddy Profec Spec B from http://www.promaxmotorsport.com/profec_b2.htm which was initially confusing to set up but now seems very easy. It is tiny (less than a thin fag packet) but does what it says on the tin and has some useful features like an audible warning if you suddenly overboost and will also display the maximum boost achieved for a few seconds after each full throttle. You could in theory use it instead of an auxilliary boost gauge on top of the dashboard though I like watching a needle move as opposed to concentrating on a numbers display.

It has a Hi and Lo boost setting and if you switch it off totally you get a 3rd boost level of whatever your default wastegate spring is.

That is what is fitted to my car apart from the exhaust - when RPM went to fit the kit for the PO, they advised him that the 4" exhaust would be a) too loud for any track days b) slightly 'chavvy' and so it was swapped for a 3" system inc downpipe, topped off with one of RPMs own rear boxes. I agree with Paul (Diver944) that the US claims can be slightly optimistic - my car is definitely faster than my old 964 but 300hp at the rear wheels?...don't think so![8|] I would guestimate 300'ish flywheel horsepower probably.

I hear the advice and will make a boost/mixture gauge my next purchase - any suggestions and how easy are they to plumb in?

Many thanks again

Fitting the boost gauge is easy, a Tee can be used to get the boost intake pressure measure from the boost line going from the intake pipe to the KLR box.

If your budget stretches to £2k (maybe a bit over) then i'd suggest the Vittesse stage 3 kit. It is extremely well respected amongst everyone i've ever read who has installed it and John, they guy who builds the kit, is a Cyborg from the future as he appears to directly support his product 24/7. I literally have not heard one bad thing about it. The MAF system it comes with is a true mass flow system which is, from what I can gather, is pretty unique amongst the various MAF kits you can get on the market and the piggy back system gives you some fine tuning opportunity. It's definately top of my list, but I fear i'll need to replace my HG at the same time so still have some saving to do. In my opinion from the substantial research I have done so far the Vittesse stage 3 kit is the ultimate off-the-shelf kit available today. If you want to go a step further you are talking standalone EMS and mega £££££.

You can find him on the link below...

Really - check out reviews of teh Vittesse kit on Rennlist.

I originally was after a Greddy but was put off as I read that it can be tricky to set up - howver once set up I believe is it pretty bullet proof. The Apexi on the other hand has a self-teach mode that will get you pretty clost out of the box,and so many different functions and features. You can literally programme whatever boost curve you want. It knows what gear you're in so you can programme different boost settings and curves in each gear- the list is endless.

Appletonn, thats interesting, as I have a K-Tec 3" on my daily runner clio 16v and its loud, was great fun at first but after a couple of years it is tiresome. Want something thats fairly quiet when at idle and when poddleing about, but lairy when you are gunning it but cant seem to find much options in uk for 944 turbo exhaust. Mine is super civilised the now (think it fairly original) and defo want something hairier. I have small turbo earlier model turbo so realise aint going to get 300bhp although lindsay racing say I can expect 5-10% less, so maybe 270bhp at wheels. Is there any other options for desired exhaust spec? I dont really want to spend the £1.3k on the one at promax, although it look like it be great.

Sawood, the vitesse does look great, but £2k is a lot (am building a house this year) and $2k is more inline with what I want to spend and that includes exhaust (suppose could ask for the 3" system, anybody experienced that). Not sure what my best option is now in terms of upgrade, given the weak dollar all the stuff from across the pond seems great value, although I could get exhaust somewhere (suggestions?) and the promax L2 kit, which I have discussed with promax, just not sure. Any suggestions or opinions valued.

Got a fuel/air ratio gauge but no lambda, can see the blank bung on the exhaust, are they a standard fit? or porsche/bosch one only? My gauge will work with 3 or 4 wire so think it happy with any that I could get to fit, wide or narrow band. Also would I be able to use and EBC with any of these kits for a wee bit extra go occasionally, following this post closely, good advice from everybody.

Also appletonn, boost easy to get in, biggest hassle i had was finding where to put it on dash, lol. Do a search as when I asked this question, i think it was diver who posted a pic of where a good place to t in was, check my previous posts. Also there a damn handy bung nearby to get into the interior, cheers all

I have the Greddy Profec Spec B ......

Ditto and agree with everything Paul said. It is a pain to set up but works very well once you get it set properly.
