OK, its a frightening figure, but current plan is to weld up the cracked cat or go for a de-cat, and re-build the wishbones myself (Rennbay kit) the brake pipes are cheaper from Berlyn Services and the smaller items I may order from the OPC.

I have used 911 design and ECP/ GSF in the past.

Any other suggestions for reliable parts suppliers??? Preferably a website I can enter the parts numbers into and get prices.

Call Bert.......[8|] If he doesn't stock it chances are PC will be the best bet anyway.

To be honest if you take the cat out it's not horrendous, but then the labour cost is not in there - are you planning to do the work yourself? If they do the work you'll be looking at more than the car is worth!

In my own opinion a lot of main dealers tend to assume a number of things:

1 - You do higher mileage so the parts may not last a year.

2 - Your next service will be 12000 miles away so the parts may not last until they next see the car.

3 - You don't have a budget. []

You don't say why it was checked by a PC, but even some specialists tend to overkill. At our 944 inspections at JZ Machtec I was advised not to drive on my tyres as they weren't n-rated, despite me not going over 70mph.....

My current indie is very good at only fixing what needs to be fixed before he sees the car next. At about 4k per year that does give him a bit of leeway.

That's really daft! Bit of an odd one too, I've never worried about N rated tyres and they didn't mentioned it in the years I went there. However they supplied and fitted some tyres for me at one point and they may have had a N rating (they were Continental Sports Contacts IIRC). As far as I'm aware N rating has nothing to do with speed, just approval for fitment on certain Porsches, and it was a system that started well after our cars were built so of no real relevance.

That is a scary list, as Paul says I'd definately shop around and think you're on the right track with Rennbay and a decat [:D]

I thought the n-rated thing was a bit stupid at the time! But then the inspection seemed to consist of measuring tyre depths and telling us that 911s are more of a "driver's car"...[:'(]

Apart from the cat, the list isn't that dissimilar to my last service. We did decide that a fair amount of the "advisories" weren't really necessary right now, so the final bill was a little more palateable!

IIRC The N designations started in the late 1980's so late Turbo's & S2's could have been specified with N1's

As to not driving car if they dont have N1 - thats a bit extreme

Thanks for the suggestions chaps! Looks like my plan was a sound one. Surprisingly, on some things (Steering column shaft etc), the OPC is actually slightly cheaper than Bert Gear! Yes, i agree, no huge urgency to get the list completed- i'm going to do all the work myself and before the next MOT is the deadline. I'm thinking of replacing the track rod ends while I'm at it, and with new column joints, wishbone balljoints and track rod ends the steering should feel great again.

I would love to know what they advise one should use for track days then? ISTR the only N rated tyres still available in 944 16" sizes would be Continental sportcontacts and Bridgestone S01/S02, neither designed for a front engined pork. Some outfits quote michelin pilot mxx3's but these are really old and don't show up on the Michelin website so possibly old stocks.

Same lot also told me several years ago that modifying the suspension on a 944 S2 for trackday etc. was a waste of time and money.
