Living with 550bhp Turbo S

Hello,
After a few years and a few Porsche cars, I've just collected my 59 plate Lava Grey Turbo S from Sutton Coldfield to return to Cayenne ownership. Yes its a beast and not pc in todays climate but I like my 4x4s and Porsche cars equally so have combined my Cayman S and Range Rover Sport leaving a way open to a fun older Porsche or a play day P38 Range Rover early next year. A new 2012 model Range Rover Sport was the alternative but it hurts these days recovering from 20% tax on a new car so I've convinced myself the return to Cayenne is all good.
I know the turbo S in the 2005/6 years and 2008/9 run out of gen 2 are not common so just wondering how many live in PCGB members hands, and does anyone want to share experience of ownership?

Not quite but...
Had a '55 turbo for 6 months or so now, after failing to find an S in the spec we wanted bought a basalt black turbo, grey leather, 20 inch wheels.
Had an S before when they first came out - great car but this is soooo much better, ride response noise levels and it will return 20+ mpg if not confronted with towns or queuing traffic - or you can use all the performance! Had a G wagen in between - primitive technology but the build quality of a bank vault. Which is probably why I couldn't cope with what Land Rover pass off as build quality - but I did look!
Recently sold the 964RS and replaced it with an Rgruppe style 911E.
Very happy with the line up now - except when I see an RS when I wonder.

I'm sure you'll be happy with the Turbo S. Real world roads it'll do everything you need, if you track it you'll need a good tyre supplier - and the driving experience of an older Porsche will remind you what all the moderns have lost!
 
Enjoy the Turbo S. I have owned mine from new May 09, close to 50,000 miles on the clock now. Excellent car. I had the Vogue Supercharged RR before, not a patch on the Turbo S.

Like the idea of the older Porsche, its good to have the contrast. I have a 993 and love the contrast.

My fuel consumption is approximately 16 / 17 miles to the gallon for every day driving, motorways will move out to 18/ 19. Tyres last approx 15,000 miles, Michelin are the best by far. Continental performed poorly.

The car has been faultless. I should also mention that I had the car chipped by DMS Automotive (3 months into ownership), they say this lifts the car by 50hp. Not sure of the absolute figure, however, the difference is incredible. Boost pressure on the gauge is off the scale and the car is exceptionally strong mid range.

(Personally I move between the sport setting and the normal mode frequently to suit my driving, one quirk of the electronics is that if you leave the car in normal and switch of the traction control the car runs another setting and performs like it is in sport dropping into 1st gear, holding the revs higher, etc)

Ignore the above in brackets for the moment and enjoy your car.
 
Thanks for replies, my american work mate made the comment today that I'd moved out of a sports car into a moms school run Porsche, perhaps i'll take him for a little "school" run tomorrow to demonstrate theres more than one way to skin a cat when it comes to sporty driving.

bit of a difference to the diesel cayenne you told me you were looking at.

Hope you dont take too much of a hit on it when you change again as i am sure the residuals on a lump like this are not as good as the diesel would have been.

Might have to debadge it Elliot as it seemed to be a red rag to the white van bulls today on the work run, plus had a VW EOS nearly driving off the road to stay ahead of me this evening, must of taken offence at the xenons... very hard not to squirt the throttle and leave everyone behind coming off every roundabout. At least you don't get the window squirters trying to soak the Cayenne as they did the Cayman S on the A1 run.

I owned a 06 Turbo S for around 8 months. I just could not take to it at all. I remapped it to around 600bhp so was very fast other than that there was nothing I really liked about the car. Sold it and bought a 4.2tdi Q7 whick I like alot.

Pity as I really wanted to like the Porsche. It's the kind of car you dream about owning but owning it killed the dream lol.
 
Its always each to his own, on the subject of Audi 4x4s we have had a new Q5 in the family for a few months and it hasn't impressed and not delivering on the promises audi make for this vehicle and now having driven the Range Rover Evoque on and off road the Q5 days are numbered. Meanwhile I'm still enjoying squirting the turbo cayenne away from the roundabouts leaving everyone behind, together with a higher comfort level and greater build quality than my Range Rover Sport. I'm still convinced the Cayenne was the right decision even though its covered in a layer of Hertfordshire red clay mud at the moment...

I agree deffo each to their own but a Q5 is not a Q7.

I also agree re the range rover. I drove the Full fat and the sport and would not consider buying one. As for leaving stuff at round abouts yes the turbo s will deffo do that. My 4.2tdi is no slouch though with 326bhp and 760nm it can shift as well and that is standard once remapped 400bhp and 1000nm torque is mental cant wait[:D].
