locking wheel nuts missing

Hi,

I've just bought a 996 and really looking forward to finally picking it up at the weekend! I've just thought to ask the owner if he has the locking wheel nuts and it seems he doesn't have them (or the toolkit). I called an OPC who said that to remove the old nuts would be at least an hours labour, plus £40+VAT for a new set. Is there a better alternative to doing this?

There isn't much alternative. The OPCs should have "master keys", and anyone else would have to butcher them off - so you are best to go the expensive route to avoid damage to the alloys. Try and get the seller to pay? Difficult because you have paid for the car, I know.......
 
Change your OPC!!!
Happened to me - went to Exeter - Chris went out to the workshop - produced the correct older key, he gave it to me - I went out the front removed the remaining locking nuts with my wheel bar and returned the lock key to him and then bought the replacements from him.
Even gave me the discount without me having to ask for it.
Ten minutes - job done!
 
That sounds good Steve. I got this price informally on the phone from Cambridge OPC which is where I want to take the car for a major service as soon as I've got it. Maybe since they're doing the service they would do the nuts at the same time for free. I dont know but hopefully they will be official Porsche locking nuts.
 
All opcs should have a master set of the lock nuts - there are only about 30 variations - they can then order a new lock nut, I had to do this when my lock nut split..if I remember correctly the new lock nut was about 15 quid...
 
If it was originally a UK spec car it would have the official Porsche Locking Nuts anyway from new.
Can't see why anyone would have changed them?
 
When my locking nut key split I took the car to OPC Hatfield and a guy came out with their master set and tried them in turn until he found the one that fitted and then told me what number it was so I could order a new one. However, I did not need to because he also had a box full of odd locking nut keys which he looked through and found the right number and gave it to me at no charge. Good service from the OPC.

Absolutely no disrespect to you guys, but you have the advantage that you seem to have built up a relationship with your OPC, whereas poor Alex hasn't even got his Porsche yet. I can't imagine what an OPC would say to me (as I don't use them) if I wandered up to the service desk and asked if I could borrow one of their special tools to check which wheel nut key I needed. I'd probably get the same response they gave Alex.

As you suggest yourself Alex, when you take it in for the major service ask them to supply a new key. They should take the wheels off anyway to check the brakes, so it will turn a 1 hour job into 5 minutes.
 
And its worth investing in a tool kit/took roll as there are some unique bits in there you might need like the towing eye (hopefully not!) and the headlamp removeal key.

OPC charge, well OPC prices. There are some indie's that sell them but I noticed there was one on ebay last night.

Actually, I remember when I bought my car, they took a log of the Radio Code, Wheelnut Key number etc. All this should be in the system for them to just look up.
 
Thanks for that Mark, I will be picking up the car tommorrow, and then calling into an OPC to get some oil and coolant, I'll ask them about the wheelnut key number then - and the radio code, good point!

Beershark, yes, I definately want to get a proper 996 toolkit. It seems that it's £96+VAT from an OPC, or £55+VAT and delivery from Porsche-Apart Ltd in Porsche Post. A couple of toolkits have been sold on Pistonheads for about £30 + delivery so I'll have another look on there first.
