Locking Wheel Nuts

Just realised my 944 has locking nuts on the rear wheels and i don't have the key, and the tyres are shot. Anybody have any clever ways to get them off? and anybody know where i can get some new nuts (just normal, not locking) from?

Thanks
Matt

It's worth ringing someone like ATS or other larger tyre-fitters - they sometimes have the ability to remove them. Failing that your nearest OPC will have a key for all the various sets ( Exeter were kind enough to lend me the correct one FOC while I nipped out into the car park, took my old set off and replaced them with the set I had just bought from them!) At the time they were not that pricey, but I understand from recent posts that the price may now be quite expensive even for just plain replacement nuts. HTH

Thanks . Not sure they are original Porsche locking nuts or not but have ordered new Porsche locking nuts so if they look the same i will in to am OPC first . Thanks for the advice .

Mine had original Porsche locking wheel nuts and I got mine off with a pair of pliers ! Once you have them off there is an ordinary nut behind so no need to replace if you don't want to. New nuts are about £3 each from here [link=http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk/]http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk/[/link] I leave the locking wheel nuts off mine - I think the risk of getting wheel pinched these days is pretty low.

Id hammer an old socket onto them and remove them: replace them with a decent set of McGards. Simon

Yes McGards; theyre the best locking nuts that you can buy. The later type also have a hardened spinning ring which will prevent the type of removal that I have suggested. For valuable wheels Id recommend using two sets on opposing studs: which will prevent other removal methods. Simon

Went to a tyre place . Asked if they could take off locking nuts and they said probably not . They were old tri lock one with three holes in . After some ones teeth sucking the chap went and got a selection of old tri lock keys. Found one that was the closest fit and hammered it on and off came the nuts . The nuts aren't even damaged . Any body fancy some free locking nuts without a key ? Thanks for all your advice

Now get a set of late McGards, but be careful with the key as they wont come off nearly as easily. As I said before:if your wheels are valuable, then fit two locking nuts per hub on opposite studs. Simon
