Look at my fan ??

Has anyone encountered this problem with their fan on a 964. Car has done 41K only and looks like this was just pure heat. If something had got stuck in the propellors they would have broken so that has been ruled out.

Anthony,

It's a little difficult to see with such a small image exactly what is peeling. Is it some sort of finish peeling off the blades or is it the blades themselves coming apart. If the bearing wears it's well known that the blades will touch the housing - and that would have a pretty drastic effect on the tips of the blades. If it's just a paint finish peeling off it may just be a bad application. As far as I'm aware the fan blade isn't painted as standard although many have had theirs done subsequently.

Can you get a better image of just one blade - it might make it easier to see.

Regards

Dave

Eight out of the twelve fins have just split wide open as if you had cut them down the middle and seperated the sections. I have just replaced the fan together with the RS upgraded hub to get rid of one belt, and hope it doesn't happen again. I have just imported the car from Japan
For anyone interested the RS hub part no. is 993.106.051.80 it took me awhile to find it.

looks like corrosion and metal fatigue to me. Might be worth making sure they paint is sound on all our fans. Just painted mine whilst it was off and the metal showed signs of pitting where the paint had flaked off.

The fan was definately not contacting the housing at all?
I just can't believe that the fan blades would spontaneously split like that without them contacting the housing (to create friction and heat +++)

No, Unless some Jap had changed the whole housing because the one in the car has no scoring whatsoever. It was the first thing that came to mind but if he had changed the housing because of a bearing failure he would surely have changed the fan as well. I would also think that the fan hopping of the housing would cause a hell of a noise in the car itself and would be unbearable to drive.

Hi

Just a thought....maybe a fan belt has broken ,or part split and caused this damage at some time during the previous owners tenure[8|]

Have fun

Just an update. It looks like Guards Red was correct. My son who is an aircraft engineer came home this morning from work and when he saw the fan he instantly said it was definitely corrosion from lying idle for long periods. He said normally parts like this are coated but my one had no signs of paint at all. Maybe its possible the early cars weren't treated but not sure. The replacement is now bright shiny red.
