Looking at a 3.2 tonight

Going to look at a 3.2 carrera tonight, the car is adverised as a sport, LHD with G50, 81k miles in marine blue with blue leather, engine rebuilt 19k ago. It is up for £9500ono.

I will get a full inspection done on the car if it seems up to scratch, but there are just a couple of niggles - It is advertised as an 1988 but has an H plate on it and if it is a sport shouldn't it have a whale tail? which it does not.

The history is only from 2000, but the current owner has had it 2 years and has had it serviced at specialist (Poss autofarm) will know more later.

Also £9500 seems very cheap for this car!!

Please advise, i am not in any rush to buy one but for this sort of money i would expect a good SC or a pup of a carrera.

The spoiler / whale tail was on the sport (option on others etc.), but could also be deleted as an option, so is not a real indication of a Sport.

DVLA 0870 2400010 can help re: the reg, but they only go by the declared year of manufacture, and if this gets muddled, then they can give it the wrong letter.

Let us have pics and info when you have seen it, but yes, £9,500 is cheap so be careful !

Regarding the spoiler - could have been a factory delete. Just make sure that it has neither chin or whaletail, as they must be fitted or deleted as a pair otherwise the handling will be adversley affected.

As a LH drive it will have been registered when it came into the UK so this could be okay. Check the "C" code in the manufacturing code for the country of manufacture C00 is for example Germany. Also the year code - should be "J" for 1988, "K" for '89.

History and condition is everything. Cars without history will have a reduced value so this together with the left hooker will have a double effect on the price. Check out the MOT's and other bills to give you a feel for use and attentive ownership. I would be dubious if it didn't have a pile of invoices and receipts.

There are a lot of cars about. Look at plenty before making any decision.

I had it narrowed down to '87 - '89 model (G50) and it took around 6 months and 15 or so cars before I was happy to part with the cash.

Take your time there are loads to look at.

Good luck

Steve

Cheers for your help guys, i'm certainly in no rush and will wait for the right car. Incidentally where is the chassis no on these??

It's in the front luggage compartment on a plate attached to the wing. There's a cut out in the boot carpet so you can read it easily.

Just another thing the sport model was technically only a UK option so check the country of origin on the plate. It may be that the first owner spec'd up certain bits of the sports kit like seats and Fuchs alloys, but not the spoilers.

Steve.

What ever happened to falling in love and making a reckless purchase [:D]

I'm not sure about the rules on age related plates for imports but an 88 shuold be a an E or F Reg. I thought you couldn't make a car newer than it is. As I said not sure on all the rules - check it out

Tell me about it.. thats why last year we ended up with a RHD SSE Cab, and again why its just been replaced with a 993 Cab.

I personally think £9500 sounds a lot for a LHD with little history.. We ditched the 1987 SSE Cab for £13500. Also if you remember back Phil Mansfield sold his 1988 RHD with a new engine for about £9500 only about 6 months ago.

I have a Carrera Targa LHD for sale. It's has Air Con and mechanically is excellent as is everything else.

Let me know if you are interested. 07904 066181

I also have a RHD Targa for sale in excellent condition. Just goes to show there are lots to choose from.
Let me know if you want a look.

I am going to look at Ian Highfields in a week or so, seems a nice guy and a nice straight car.
