Looking at buying a 997 convertible

Hi guys,

New member on here really and currently a 987 owner. However I've been toying with the idea of buying a 997 convertible for a while now and I think I'm going to go ahead in October when I get back to the UK (I work at sea).

What I'd like is any info or advice, websites with what to look for, such as common faults or wear in certain places etc. Did a search in here but couldn't find anything really. Thanks in advance

I was looking more for info on things to look at on the car such as common faults (leaking rads, IMS etc) thanks for the links though

Don't do it! [:(] Buy the Coupe every time. [;)]

Regards,

Clive.

Got to disagree with you there Clive. I think a Cabriolet Carrera is a perfectly acceptable option. It's the least sporty 911 and so doesn't make a huge handling difference on a daily basis - unless you plan on tracking the car a lot that is.

I really miss my old Carrera S cab - was a great car!

I really want a cab, I have a Boxster right now and I want to keep that aspect of the car but move on to more power. I know the coupe if a better driver's car but to be honest I'm not a track day person and I love the dual role of the cab.

You go for it,

I went from a Boxster to a 997 C2S cab and it was a great car, the sound of the sports exhaust when going through a tunnel with the roof down just cannot be equalled from within a coupe.
So if you want to enjoy the open car experience whatever toys you get with the car the sports exhaust is an absolute must.

Says the guy who changed to a turbo coupe that you just cannot hear coming, Oh how I miss that sound !!

That's the car I'm looking at a C2S, as my garage isn't wide enough for the 4S! I'm buying a new house soon with a double garage but I like the understated look of the C2S. Do you have any idea what to look for when inspecting models? I have my eye on one from the Porsche centre Bolton, but it seems expensive. OPC Bolton

I like it because it has a 24 month Porsche warranty. I've seen cheaper privately but I'm worried about buying private and having no warranty. What do you think, about the car and warranty? I bought a AA warranty with my Boxster and I'd never use them again, pretty awful and refused to pay for most things when I found issues.

Morning! A good place to start is here: http://www.gtpurelyporsche.com/downloadtracker.asp?Title=997 Carrera and Carrera S&File=997CarreraAndCarreraS.pdf
(Best copy and paste this into your browser)
This will give you a good point to start from, but a better idea is to get yourself a copy of the Peter Morgan 997 Buying Guide off of Amazon.
Good Luck!

You can buy privately with a warranty of course - Porsche warranties are transferrable on private sales. You just cannot buy from a non-OPC with an OPC warranty (unless they are selling the car on sale or return, which happens occasionally)

Yes, the OPC one is expensive - even if you do get 2 years warranty.

Hi
I work at sea as well, carnival Uk

I did have a 997 S Cab and it was very good, although i thought it looked ugly with the roof off. You will need the screen behind you.

Have now changed to a 997S gen 2 PDK with a sun roof which is great

things you need to look for are pretty much the same as on your Boxster.

i've just bought a 997 Cab. always gone for Coupe before but took a cab out for a test drive and was smitten. I bought mine from an OPC. it wasn't much more expensive than the ones i looked at for sale privatly. and it comes with the re-assurance (for me) that they have given it the thumbs up & are fixing a couple of things i wasn't happy with Before i part with my money. EG the clutch felt very heavy & engine seemed to over rev. sales manager checked it out and agreed that it needs a new clutch & a full service.

I would not feel re-assured if it took you to point out that it needed a new clutch after the OPC had given it the thumbs up! I suppose that they did at least replace the clutch.

I agree with Chris - blimey, so Joe Bloggs walks into an OPC for peace of mind -happy to pay a premium, doesn't know much about cars only to break down with a broken clutch and finding out it is due a service. Top service indeed!

Here is a guide for the 996 model, many of the issues overlap with the 997 so it may be of use to you

it hadn't been through their inspection process before i took it out. no i wasn't to Happy(or impressed) and was on the point of walking away but i'm not parting with my money untill they've done the work & i'm happy that it's fixed.
then i'll have a 5 year old car with a full 2 year OPC warrenty.
