Looking for a 944 as a daily driver

Hi members my name is Paul I currently own a carrers 3.2. Im looking for a daily runner 944 in black manual. Which model do you recommend ?

The S2 (3.0l 16v NA) is generally recommended as the sweet spot of the range.

I had an '89 2.7 before my turbo & with 165bhp & plenty of torque I thought it was an excellent car all round. On the standard 15" rims & standard suspension the ride/handling was excellent.

My '89 turbo was my everyday car for about 5 years, the tall gearing & more sporting ride made it less comfortable (it hates stop-start traffic) but it compensates in other ways [:D]

Don't rule out a 924 or 924S, if the 911 is your sporty car & you just want a nice, usable car with good handling & a Porsche badge that doesn't need to have lots of power or grip they have all the upsides & can be a little less expensive to run.

I had a 1990 Turbo in Black, heavily modified by JMG [8D]! That car was the bizniz! Handled like a go-cart and went like a rocket [8D]! I sincerely wish I still had it now. It seems to have gone on the missing list now though, cant be traced, even though I sold it less than two years ago???? So, my advice to you would be, go for a Turbo for "smile a mile" [:)][:D]!!

I covered over 1k miles across Wales in my Turbo last week, had a smile for each and every mile...oh and she's my daily driver too, has been for over 17 years now, wouldn't change her for anything....:)

Pete

Depends where the daily running is, I wouldn't use a turbo for stop/start city use, crawling along in low gears averaging 30 mph or less. High hours and low mileage doesn't do them any favours.

I'll get flamed for this, but for me the one to avoid is the 944S 16v - I had one for about a year, after my first, the 2.5 944 Lux, and found the engine had no bottom end torque. OK, it was a barrel of fun above about 4k RPM, but you can't drive like that all the time. The S2 is a much better engine and would be my first choice, even a 2.5 Lux would be OK for the daily commute - but I missed out the s2 and went for a 968 tip coupe (for 12 1/2 years, initially as our main car), swopped 5 years ago for a 968 tip cabriolet.

Been using my black s2 as my only car since I bought it, so 4 years in October...super reliable, had to replace a snapped clutch power Spring once (although I could still operate the clutch), & recently spent about £800 repairing all 4 wings, and a few hundred on brake and fuel lines, but other than that, spent little other than tyres/servicing so not bad for 4 years/15k miles. Easy to drive and considering its age it's a great daily driver. Go for it.

I use a 944 S 1988 daily and I have never had a problem.
But it has had the engine rebuilt Six years ago.

I suppose it depends on your budget. If its a good car and well looked after then any would be fine. If you're going to spend hours stuck in jams then choose a hatchback! Nothing really likes that.
I use mine daily, 11 miles each way from a bit of dual carriageway a chunk of A road, city centre and a motorway junction. I sit in traffic from time to time but its fine. Only thing to note is that the temperature gauges move more than any other car I've had. But as long as it comes down you're fine!
I imagine an S2 or a 968 would make most sense but a turbo if you can or a stock 2.5 lux would just give a different spin on the journey. I had an S first and that was equally fine just a little slower. They tend to be the least liked of the range but I doubt many people have an in depth knowledge of good examples of all models. A good S is better than a ropey S2/turbo.
Buy the best you can afford and look after it.

Can't agree with you anymore than that.
My S is hitting the 173000 mile mark now and the engine was rebuilt at 153000 since then it's had regular oil changes mainly after the winter.
Belts changed every 3-4 years.

I'm 22 years old now and this is my first ever Porsche and for me it's a massive learning curve because there's just so much to learn about the car, but it does keep me busy And I enjoy the car.
guess I'm just trying to put the youth back into the old girl haha.
