Looking for a 944...

Hello my name is David and I am new here. I have fallen in love with the 944 and am now looking for one, however, the common thread I come across is that you really have to look for a good one.

I was wondering if anyone out there could point me to a very decent one that they know of currently for sale. I live in Bristol, but I am prepared to travel nationwide to get the right car.

All the very best,

David.

Hi David,

It might take a couple of evenings, but read through the last 6 months' posts on this forum. You will learn pretty much everything about the cars, and the owners - [&:] - that there is to know.

A decent car is not too hard to find, just bear in mind that you really do need to set aside an amount to run it over a year. Buy well and keep £1500 in the car account and you'll be a very happy chap.

Hi Phil.

Thanks for your reply. Well, I think I am looking for an S2. I will be using it for everyday driving will not be one for super-duper mods in the future etc. I have between £3-£3.5K to spend. Obviously, I would be interested in checking out a good lux or turbo too, but the S2 looks like the one.

David.

ps (if I could find the right priced "introductory" fun car - significantly less than £3k that might be an idea...?)

That sort of budget should put you in the territory of a good Lux, a below average S2 or a possibly very troublesome Turbo.

Saying that, there are always some bargains to be had from someone looking to sell quickly or has simply underpriced their very good car.

The best advice is always to buy the absolute best condition car you can, so with your budget I would recommend trying to find a really good Lux but budget at least a £1000 to sort out some unknown issues in the first year

I would recommend buying my 1987 Lux and keeping cash in your account to lavish it with TLC over the first year or so.

Of course I'm going to say that though, I'm trying to sell it.

The car's in Glasgow. I originally tried to sell at the end of last year, but ended up garaging it for the winter instead. original advert with photos here. It now needs new tyres at the rear due to a slow puncture and needs a little work doing on the power steering (I suspect the fluid has leaked whilst garaged, haven't investigated yet), then it'll be ready for a new MOT and back up for sale.

I think you could get an "˜okay' S2 for 3.5K with luck on your side "¦ but you'd really need extra cash to spend on it over that first year. As a rough reckoner it's very, very easy to spend a thousand pounds or so on fixing wee bits and bobs in the first year of owning any 944 variant.

Have a poke around the Auto Trader. I saw a black 83 or 84 944 for about 1100 alan whicker. Didn't look too bad. Always, always, check for the progress of sill rot though, and never buy one from eblay unless you can view, for that very reason, unless it is not a problem for you.

Hi guys.

Paul - just been digging around the site and have seen your Panther Black S2. That's the colour isn't it! Beautiful.

Poprock - I'll drop you a line after the weekend.

Sid - I saw that one in Autotrader. With the square-style dash? What do people think of these? I think I prefer oval...

Have had a great offer from RC18B 911 Turbo (Jon) to go for a hang and chat through all things 944. I think I have come to the right place here!!!

Cheers... David.
