Looking to buy an S2.

hi,

i am am looking to buy an s2 in either red or white with black interior. Is the 944 a better classic than a 968? What are the issues I should look for when buying. Anyone got a sub 80k they want to sell?

regards

Hi, The 968 is the next Evolution, so more power than the S2 3.0 and re-styled body.

Much rarer than any 944 3.0S2, hence why they would cost more.

Condition and Service history, also how much use as many just sit for years and a low mileage may
seem attractive but such a car may need a fair bit of money spending to get it 100%, where as a
regular used higher mileage car may be ready to go.

Many people are buying classics to jump on the Investment band wagon, others to use lots and enjoy.
Where are you located ? north or South Wales...

My opinion...
This is true mainly because sales of the 968 were poor - mostly because they were too expensive to be competitive in their market. Remember the S2 had a production run of 3 years while the 968 was produced for 4 (1992 - 1995) yet it seems more S2s were sold.
Also the "motoring press" holds the 968 in higher esteem than the 944s because they were built at the Porsche Stuttgart plant so "real" Porsches. It seems that 944S2 still has some of the cross-model taint from the 924 - primarily because they were built at the Audi Neckarsulm plant - even though these cars are fully updated. Porsche also claims that 80% of the 968 was all new but comparing them side by side you have to imagine that a significant number of parts got new numbers perhaps through evolution rather than being a totally new design - for example - the front control arm rear mounts we all put on our late model 944s are "968" parts yet are a direct replacement.
So while the superiority of the 968 over the 944S2 may be debated - it seems that the 968s will be maneuvered into "classic" status with appropriate collect-ability and rising prices. This may yet happen to the 944 - after all, "classic" status is starting to be applied to the 914 even though many thousands of those models were sold (it helps that they were highly susceptible to corrosion so a significant percentage of them have dissolved).

Thank you all for your replies. Looking to add the 944 to my c4s 996 to use both regularly and swap around to keep mileage down.
Am looking at a manual turbo as well, what are the keys items on these to look for? Better than an s2?

I've owned 2 Audi's, a 1993 80 2.6 Avant and a 2005 A4 2.0T quattro Avant. I kept each longer than any other daily/runaround car I've had. If Audi put the 944's together as well as their own cars I doubt Stuttgart did a better job on the 968's when they were in financial trouble.
