Looking to buy my first 944

Hello Simon,

The picture in the Turbo advert of the line up of 944's was taken last summer when bunch of us were down at Goodwood - Must admit thats the only time I met both car and owner but am pretty certain he is a long time owner and club member. Others who were there would probably know more - Mr Sims are you out there ?

Could well be worth a look.

S2 is interesting - why would a half-plastic tartan interior count as "sports"?

Turbo does have sports seats.....[&:]
 
That tartan interior reminds me of Chevettes and Mark 1 Cavaliers which sported something not unlike that - not sure its the best look for a '44. [8|]
 
You're right - i knew i'd seen it before..

I've seen a few black leather interiors on ebay so the tartan would have to go pdq.

prefer the turbo in looks and oomph, but 140 odd thousand miles feels like a lot?
 
Oooooookkkkkkaaayyyyy .... where do I start ....

I bought an S2 nearly 2 years ago, and looked at a very large number. One of them was in Hampshire, and the advert suggested it was immaculate to the extent that had just rolled out of the factory. The bloke on the 'phone said (and I quote), "if you find anything wrong with it, I'll give you £50". So I made the 300-mile round trip to see it.

The car wasn't as good as it could have been. In fact, it was a dog. It wouldn't start. The headlights wouldn't work. The handbrake came off in my hand when I tried to drive it. The owner didn't have a V5, so couldn't prove he owned it. It also had more than the slightest suggestion that it had been heavily damaged in the rear, and repaired.

I didn't buy it. I bought a much nicer example for over a grand less.

That car was being sold by someone with a remarkably identical name to the name of the guy selling the S2 you linked to ...

It's a different car, and I'll charitably suggest that the one I looked at was having an off day when I saw it (if you see what I mean), and I am sure that the black one with the wild interior is a lovely example ... just tread carefully.

140K miles isnt really much for these cars - in fact lower mileage examples can have more problems as they have often been sat unloved in garages or barns slowly seizing up. 944's are happiest when being used regularly.

Buy on condition, service history and always check when the belts were last changed in particular. A higher mileage car with a thick folder full of bills showing things being replaced as they wore out is much better than a low mileage one thats not been cared for.

Properly looked after these things easily cope with the miles.

No, but he did very generously give me an earful of grief about what a great car it was, how I was a fool to pass it up etc etc etc. Which became fairly abusive because I was clearly a timewaster, and he was an honest man as I was trying to accuse him of dodgy dealings concerning the V5 ...

Is the belt change on the Turbo within 12000 miles good enough? How often do they need changed?

I really feel like travelling the 300 mile (coincidence? but no £50 offered) round trip to see the Turbo and i'm completely put off the S2 by zcacogp. It's got bad vibes now..

so how many miles has everyone else got on their turbos?

Is the belt change on the Turbo within 12000 miles good enough? How often do they need changed?

Belts are officially 48k/4 years, so 12k is fine. More importantly check the date, as with low average mileage it's more likely that the 4 years will be up before the miles. To be on the safe side, I recommend every 36k/3 years for the peace of mind. I'd want to see the receipt from a respected specialist to be completely sure in any case. There are many previous threads on the other things that should be changed by now, or will need doing soon, such as water pump or fuel lines. Search is your friend! [:)]

As has been said before mileage is actually pretty irrelevant. As is early history, although nice to look through a great big file does it really improve my car to know that it had wiper blades in 1987? Go on condition and the history over the last four or five years.

First thing would be to decide whether you want a turbo or an S2! If you read the threads over the last couple of days you'll see that they are almost two different cars. I'd be wary of buying either without being absolutely sure what driving characteristics you want.

That S2 does look nice.......[&:]

Max interval between belt changes is 4 years - many suggest 3 years just to be on the safe side. If the belt lets go it will create quite a mess of the engine....[&o]

Two other things worth checking to see if they have been done are the water pump (often gets done at same time as the belts if its ailing) and clutch (which is a big expensive job to get replaced though last well). Oh yes and check the sills for signs of rust, the Turbos and S2's are more prone to this than Lux's.

My Turbo has 124,000 on the clock, many have considerably more.

My '91 turbo has 134000 on it with, I suspect, a new head gasket at around 80000.

As has been said, try both cars as they are very different flavours of the same delicious recipe![:D]
