Evening All,

I'm looking for some guidence... I'm a current 996 Cab owner and a past 993 owner, I've been offered a 944 Turbo Cab at what looks like a good price and value your thoughts. The car has about 150K miles and needs cosmetic work (New hood, Steering wheel, Rust hole on front wing just infront of wheel arch) The car has been stood for about 6 months outside... (I know the engine and it runs very well) Without knowing the price of 944 spares I'm keen to understand your thoughts. I've been offered the car at 4K

[8D][FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Seriously, Andrew is right; at that money you have quite a margin to put it right before it owes you more than you could sell it for, and even if it does go a little over the market value it would be a nice car and Turbo cabs are rare. Also seriously, if you decide against it then I would love to be introduced to it.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Unless you find something terminally wrong with this car then I would SNAP HIS HAND OFF [:D]

£4k is a very low price for a Turbo Cab - please put me down as 3rd reserve after Fen and Andrew have no doubt spent all morning trying to find it [;)]

The worst sounding problem is the rusty wing. A brand new galvanised wing from Porsche will set you back £400 inc vat and a good bodyshop should be able to fit and spray it for another £400

A good indepandant should be able to inspect the car and let you know if there is anything else seriously wrong. I would budget £1.5k to give it a good Full service with ALL fluids and a belt change along with any other things an inspection finds. Then you will have a 160mph convertible Porsche [:D]

Me? Surely not...[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]All I can think of that I have left (all to suit late Turbo) is:[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
  • turbo (3,500 miles since rebuild)
  • water pump for turbo
  • plumbing for turbo cooling
  • expansion tank with turbo cooling outlet
  • ECUs
  • cycling valve and plumbing
  • Autothority MAF
  • PAS pump
  • PAS hoses & reservoir
  • rear brake calipers
  • compressor (need to check it works and the case seems to have a melted bit on it)
  • sunroof bag & straps (perfect)
  • jack (unused)
  • spare wheel (unused)
  • struts (very used, but proper late Turbo and could be modified to take inserts)
  • top mounts
  • -35mm springs
  • alternator bracket and cowl to suit a/c car
  • complete a/c system minus compressor (evaporator still in car and it would take a lot to persuade me to remove it)
  • marine blue steering wheel
  • badge panel with slots and mesh
  • bridge spoiler (original and used) with new tailgate finishing trims from ESS
  • front PU undertray "batwing" (scuffed but complete and uncracked)
  • 16" Boxster alloys without tyres (OK, not for a late Turbo)
possibly available:[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
  • complete engine with balanced bottom end, lightened flywheel, thermal coated manifolds and 3,500 on a total rebuild, though I'd rather add the turbo, MAF, ECUs etc. and sell that as a complete unit making 300bhp approx.
  • pair of wishbones with PowerFlex bushes (but only once PowerFlex make some that don't break up)
That's all I can think of, so hardly anything really.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Ref parts, does any Porsche Steering wheel fit the 944 or are we limited ? Also, I saw somewhere on the postings a reference to a great scratch remover, can anyone remember the name as I can't find the post again...

naaah. you should be OK with any Porsche wheel. airbag compatibility withstanding of course....

I've used meguiars sctratch-off (or something like that!) with OK, but not great results. Try the concours forum, they'll know more.....
 
I'm not so sure. I think the square dash 944 and 924 are different to the oval dash 944 and 968 for example. [FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Check what other models the '91 944 Momo boss fits on their website and that will give you a good clue.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
Cheers again folks, I think I'm now going to reFurb the standard wheel.

On a different note, does the Turbo have a unique front wing to a standard 944 ? (I need one if anybody has a rust free passenger side panel going), I'm also having trouble shutting my boot (It won't latch !) and I was wondering if this is a common problem or just mine...

I'm sure this brain picking will add up to several pints further down the line...

The Turbo and S2 do have a different wing to the Lux and S so make sure you get the right one (brand new galvanised is under £400 from the OPC).

The hatch problem is common and is caused by the 'jaws' sticking open.

Look down into the latch mechanism and with the key in the lock you should see the jaws opening and closing. Try loosening off the latches if the jaws are sticking (the bolts are underneath), or give them a good lube with WD40 followed by oil. If that doesn't work you'll have to take them off and clean them out (they get gunged up because the hatch drains through them)

New latches are circa £20 each
 
you may also find in this "cold" weather that the pin needs adjusting down a bit. Not too much mind or the hatch won't seat against the seal properly.
 
Cracking buy for £4K!!! V. Jealous (unless it's two cars welded together[:D])

On the parts front, I thought it might be a good idea to point you in the direction of good ol' e-bay. While there's some utter tat on it, there's also some decent bargains to be had. Decent Turbo front wings do come up (and will be far cheaper than new!) Sounds like you might need a few bits and pieces, and hopefully, most of the problems will be due to it standing rather than misuse.

On the painting front, if your going to be spending mega bucks, just thought I'd point out that £400 should get your wing fitted and resprayed at an OPRC, which will also include a lifetime guarantee. Problem being that they'll only do so if it's a brand new genuine Porsche part (although you can buy it yourself!)
 
Just remembered you have a Turbo Cab [8|]

The boot mechanism may be totally different to what I've just described for the glass hatchback. I've never looked closely at a Cab boot so I could be way off the mark [:-]
 
Sounds like you've got a good deal there. I wouldn't worry too much about the wing corrosion. I've got a bit of rust coming up on my nearside wheelarch at the bottom of the wing which is a fairly typical place to find it. Most of the bodyshops i've tried have advised against replacing the wing as that can cause it's own set of problems but instead to perform a weld repair around the hole once they've taken away all the surrounding rotten metal. Obviously they can't tell the extent of the rust until they start working on it and it may get to the stage where replacing the wing is a better option but by all accounts the wing would have to be fairly rotten before you got to that stage. All in all the quotes are coming out around the £350 ish which includes respraying the entire wing to blend in with the rest of the car so if that's the only signs of corrosion you should be OK.
 
The cab boot is entirely different to the coupe hatch. For one it has a central catch rather than two at the sides. Mine never gave any problem hence I'm afraid I never investigated the technical detail of the differences.
