loose gearstick

devans

New member
hi,
just about to join the motorway and the gearstick came away in my hand. Luckily, it was in fourth gear and meant i still had power to get the car to a safe parking spot just before i engaged the motorway.
A friend of a friend helped me out who contacted a garage who towed the car in and did the repair the following day. Apparently, the cable between the gear stick and the gear box had snapped at the gearbox end.
All in all, i was very thankful that the job got done pretty quick. However, the bill came to £540. I dont wish to moan but this does seem a bit steep. Has anyone had similar or have experience of what this job would normally cost!
Many thanks

If they fitted a new cable assembly, then I don't think that is too bad. The cable is £238 inc VAT, and the book time is 2.3 hours, although that time is usually optimistic on a 15 year old car. You have to remove the centre console and shift mechanism, remove the undertray and transmission bracket, remove and replace the cable, put it all back together, and adjust the cables.

Just to show you that you aren't alone in this experience, here is a photo of another broken one, which is what I expect happened to yours:

Many thanks Richard.

On another front, i noticed from your picture that there seems to be other connectors. Does the cable assembly do all gears or are the cable assemblies for seperate gears, ie are there five fitted?

What im really trying to find out is whether this issue could occur again for a particular gear or whether the problem has been completely resolved,

many thanks.

There are only two large cables in the assembly, which goes from the bottom of the shift mechanism, and attach to two arms on the transmission as per the photo. The most common problem is that the plastic clips holding the cable sleeve end to the bracket on the box break, causing the same effect as a broken cable. The common fix is also shown in the photo - a cable tie!

Thanks Richard.
He did say he could do a temporary fix to get me home but i didnt want to take the risk of it coming loose again on the motorway.
