Loose mirror base

I have a problem with the passenger door mirror. the base on the outside of the door is loose. The mirror is a tight fit onto the base but the base is loose around the rubber gasket. To make matters worse the Allen key head is chewed beyond recognition. I've looked at various videos and the base seems to be attached to the door by means of 2 'hooked pegs ' on the lower side of the base and the Allen key tightens the mirror base and gasket onto the door. Is the tightness of the Allen key the only means of tightening the base to the door My car is an 88 MY 220 turbo

Is that correct? The electrics work fine but there is some poorly repaired damage to the door skin

I am sure that is the only way to tighten up the mirrors, I think the passenger mirror has the outside temp sensor in it but that might be for later cars only

I do know the passenger mirror has a much bigger connector in it, you might have to drill the top off that allen bolt or try some ruined screw removal tools

I removed the mirrors from mine recently to refit the gaskets and clean the paint around the base.

You're correct that the mirror has pegs that slot into place on the door skin then the allen key bolt goes into a captive nut (which has some movement in it) and tightens it all up. I suspect you're going to have and find a way to get the allen key bolt out but there isn't much space around the mirrordoor or access from in the door. If you're feeling brave maybe drill out or reverse thread the allen key bolt to extract it.

If you remove the door card,have sprayed the top & underneath parts with something like GT85 & repeated & left overnight,& a hammered in Allen key won't budge it ,then I would try glueing with gap filling epoxy ,the largest Allen key that will fit in the Allen bolt recess or grind a larger key to make it fit ,apply a hot soldering iron to the top of the sawn off key ,use a battery drill with a hammer setting carefully assuming you have one of those multisets that includes suitably sized sockets
 
Thanks for the input. I'm concerned that something has broken inside, maybe one of the lugs as the mirror assembly it is really quite loose and there has been a poor door skin repair below the mirror Also I hadn't thought about a reverse thread remover as the shaft of the Allen key can only be about3 mm diameter. I thought about using a small cutting disc on my Dremel drill ( great investment) to cut a slot in the head. Ok I'll damage the PLastic?? base a bit but it will get covered when the mirror is in place. Is the Allen bolt likely to be an OPC item?

IIRC it's just a bog standard Allen screw which is usually covered by a small plastic plip in cover about 30mm long-possibly plated( although plating Allen screws reduces the strength).
 
Just to report back got this sorted by lots of WD 40 and hammering an Allen Key into the mess that was the head of the bolt. The shank is about 40 mm long and the bolt was slightly bent

The near side mirror has a flat glass, Is a convex one available?
