LOOSE WHEEL

I have only just had the wishbones done and noticed there was excessive noise from driving over speed bumps. To my suprise their is excessive play in the drivers side front wheel. I can literally move it forwards and backwards with my hands. This is somewhat concerning. What could be causing this!!?

Hi Maurice, thanks for responding. I thought it maybe the wheel nuts loose so have checked but they are not and in the process I cant get the locking nut off. No the wishbones were replaced last week but surely they would have been tightened up properly!!
 
I had the same some time ago. Diagnosis a faulty wheel bearing. About £160 all in with a local indie.
 
The 993 has a rubber damper between rack and trackrod end,this can collapse,does the wheel move if you push/pull at the front and rear of the wheel?

Hi Chris - are you referring to the ball joint? This was replaced recently. Yes it moves from side to side (forward and back) when you push-pull. Exactly
 
I'm trying to visualise your description but, if I'm right in my assumption, the only thing I can think of that would allow the wheel to move forward and back in the line of travel would be the castor adjustment on the front suspension.

Loose lug nuts, worn wheel bearings or worn steering linkages would only allow movement in the steering range, i.e. left/right. Only the castor adjustment will physically allow the wheel to move forward or backwards.

Thanks Dave. I assume castor adjustment would have been checked following new wishbones fitted?

The point is exactly that. The castor adjustment would have to be reset when new wishbones are fitted and my concern might be that it may not have been tightened correctly. I think assumption is a very dangerous affliction when matters of safety are concerned. I think it's got to be worth returning the car and have it checked without delay.

HI the damper play will show up if you try and turn the steering,from the wheels.Set the wheels straight,wheels of the ground,then try to turn the steering buy pushing/pulling at the 9 and 3 o'clock position,if there is freeplay before the rack moves then damper collapsed,hope that clarify's it for you.
