Losing coolant from overflow

I have a 2002 boxster and it decided to dump its coolant on my driveway Friday evening after a short drive home. Looks like it streamed out of the overflow near the right rear tyre. Lifted boot carpet and checked for any leaks but nothing major just a few droplets near the reservoir. Filled up to correct level and tested again, same thing happened with the usual warning light on the dash and low fluid level warning.Would appreciate any ideas as to what could be the cause of this. Oil clean,no sign of discolouration etc.

Welcome Murray!

I would start by replacing the coolant cap. They are prone to failing, and blowing off at too low a pressure. Check the part number on the cap. If it end with 00 or 01, definitely change it. IIRC the latest is 04.

I'd be inclined to run it up to temperature on your drive and look for leaks, it may be that fluid is leaking out some where, most likely water pump or one of the radiators and then its overheating causeing the presurisation and subsequent loss of fluid at the expansion tank.

No issues since I've had the car, just a service before I collected it 8 months ago. Decided to bite the bullet and have booked it into Autostrasse here in Essex. Greenflag are going to deliver it there for me as well [:)]
Thanks to all who responded to my request, will post an update with outcome. Car booked in for 17th Sept.

Fitted a new coolant cap as it was the old PN and it stopped the leaking from the overflow. I was still getting the low level warning light after topping up and a short run. Got the car back from Autostrasse yesterday and the only problem they found was that the cooling fans were not cutting in when they should. This was fixed by replacing some resister packs. Car now running normally.

Now the indicator stalk looks like its on the way out. Not cancelling on a left turn and not staying on for a right. Been doing some research and the 3 stalk switch assy for my model with an OBC and no cruise is around £285, but a 4 stalk with CC option is £100 cheaper!?Anyone had any experience with getting the unit replaced? There is a utube video showing how to do it.......

Many thanks for your support so far!

Murray,

I seem to recall that there was recent forum post (996?) on the 3-stalk vs 4-stalk replacement issue a few weeks ago which might help you.

Jeff
