Loss of Reverse Gear

Hi,

Went out yesterday for a drive in the nice weather ..... on returning to the car I could not select reverse gear, and so had to resort to manually pushing the car backwards up a slight incline to get out of the car parking space .... wife was not very impressed at having to help, and much amusement to the onlookers ....

Got home and when trying again I found that I could select reverse gear ... few hours later could not, and same this morning .... not possible to select reverse. The car is a 996 manual. It appears as though there is no gating when you push the lever to the left. Quite happily selects gears 1 - 6, but will not go further to the left to allow selection of reverse .... any ideas on the problem, as it is going into the OPC tomorrow morning (Tuesday)?

Note that I had a short-shifter fitted 3 months ago by the OPC and whilst this may be a co-incidence I am a little suspicious at this point in time.

Thanks, Jason

Hi Richard,

Good news is that is was a cable issue, so easy to rectify. It was not at the gear lever end, but the gear box end.

Apparently the connector at the end of the cable came loose and 1 of the 2 cables was not working as expected, thus stopping reverse gear from working. OPC say that the connector is slightly corroded and so is now also held on with a cable tie to stop the same issue ocuring. If it does then they state that I will need a whole new cable assembly fitted, with a connector that is not corroded.

All I now need to do is locate the offending cable connection and see for myself what the problem was. Replacing the whole cable for the sake of a connector seems a little excessive (but maybe that is all that can be done). If you have any idea where the cable connector is likely to be located then please let me know.

Thanks, Jason

Unfortunately, you can only buy a complete cable assembly. It looks like this at the rear end:

Thanks Richard ... will jack up the back & take a look. Earlier I couldnt see which side it was on, but with it jacked up I am sure I will be able to see what is going on.

Cheers, Jason [:D]
