Loud clunk from rear suspension?!

Hello all Boxster friends.

Has anyone encountered this kind of thing? >> a loud clunk from the rear of the car, 4 times in 20 miles. This happened for the first time yesterday after nearly 3 years of trouble free motoring.

I was a bit alarmed when I heard the noise and had a look under the car bit there's not a lot to see unless its on a ramp. The "clunk" seemed to be suspension related as it occurred when I had to go over a larger deviation in the road surface.

It occurred 4 times during 20 miles .. all at slow speed (15 - 40 mph). All was OK after that. It sounded as if it was a very stiff bush reluctantly moving in its mount. Just like I used to get in my old Mini Cooper's rear suspension "knuckle ball joint" 35 yrs ago.

The car is garaged and I last drove it 4 days previously to this happening.

Any Ideas? The car is due its first MOT in December so it will be checked then (if not before) but wondered if anyone has had this happen to their Boxster and what it may be.

hi iain, had a similar problem on my 's' when it was about 2 years old and some 25k on the clock.

the car was in the opc for three days, as they could not identify the problem immediately. but bless their cotton socks(very big tongue in very big cheek!) they eventually traced the noise to the trailing arm suspension links, and both were duly replaced. hey presto, the clunking ceased!!!!

fortunately the car was under warranty, so i was spared the £700(parts only) that it cost to sort the matter.

hope this helps, regards, glenn.

Thanks for the information Glenn.

I will try and have a look at that area and see if it may be that. Seems bad that they can wear so quickly. Maybe I am enjoying speeding round the corners too much![:D]

Experienced this problem on my 2.5 Boxster over the past month, yesterday travelling at about 25mph I had a final very loud clonk and lost all drive. OPC say two of the bolts at the gearbox end of the drive shaft had come loose and the other 4 had sheared. They say I was lucky as it has only destroyed the suspension link and not the complete subframe. May be worth checking the bolts. I do not know if any other Boxster has suffered this problem

Peter, Thanks for your information.

I have had a good look under the car and see no problem. All the bolts are intact. I have had the noise return only once in the past 3 weeks (500 miles). I am taking it into the Porsche centre in 2 weeks time to see if they can locate the problem.
