low oil in gearbox

Hi all

I am just wondering beacuse my 85' old style dash 944 could be very ill, what damage would low oil in an auto gearbox do. I am asking because i think mine was v low and now the the car is not roadworthy. I mean that as i select gear, which it does no problem the car clunks very loud with each half rotation of the wheels. I know there is something not good about it so i filled it up with ATF fluid which took nearly 2 ltrs and thought that would help. So could there be any other reason that would cause this clunking or am i going to be looking for a 2nd hand auto box [:(]

Any help would be excellent

Thanks
Kelv

In my experience of low ATF in Porsche Auto boxes (928), it meant that there wasn't enough hydraulic pressure generated to operate some internal thingummy which meant that the drive was very poor - it drove very like a manual with a slipping clutch. Filling up with fluid solved this problem immediately.

So, I'd be looking at other things as well. CV's - yes. Something dragging or catching somewhere, perhaps?

Oli.

thanks for the quick response,
I am hopefully taking it to garage in next few days to see whats what, a mechanic i know said the same sort of thing. As the car is nearly 24 y old it could be a snapped/broken cv joint as this would clunk as the wheel turns. If it was a bad gaerbox problem it would hardly engage gear, which mine does fine, Its just the moving forward or back which the clunk happens.
