LOW / ROUGH IDLE.

MY 99 996 C4 IDLES ROUGH / LOW AND IS MUCH WORSE WHEN AIR CON IS SWICHED OFF ! CAN THE IDLE BE AJUSTED SLIGHTLY ?

My 98 996 started to do the same thing a couple of years ago. Tickover fell from about 650 to stutter but was only restored to a steady 800 with the a/c on. Fault was traced to silencer box with loose baffle.

So, was the silencer replaced, or can the baffle be 'tightened'? The only reason I ask is that my car is more rough on idle with the A/C switched off - so I just leave it on!

Andrew, sorry to report but they can't get into the innards of these SS boxes. I bought 2 almost new from Tech9 (they have a shed full of them!). Not only were the replacements the newer type with the flex-joint but they make a much nicer noise. not quite PSE, but hey, who needs plod looking at you all the time?

Hi

Get the MAF sensor checked. MY98's have a rough idle - its perfectly normal.
This was addressed in the 99MY I believe but bot 100%.
I had this on my 98MY & it was a faulty MAF...quite normal to have to replace on of these on this age of car - cost me £350 fitted from a specialist. The bulk of that price is the cost of the part as its a very simple job to fit.

Julian.

PS : I also found that when pulling away the revs would drop then bounce back up making clean pull-aways difficult, again all cured with a replacement MAF.

I have a mid 1999 build car, and so it could well fit this diagnosis. It might also explain my 5800-6000 rpm flat spot which has been considerably alleviated after a service, but which I suspect is still there (but it might be pyschological now). This was reported, but, inevitably became a NFF (as the diagnostics did not report a fault). It could be time for a second opinion!
Thanks for that (I know I did not start this thread, but that's the point of forums, isn't it?)
