Just brought the SPYDER out of hibernation ,I have what looks like a fault .1 When I reset the clock to the correct time and then start it up it goes back to either 9.00 or 12.00 . 2. Just went to fill it up with some fuel as was showing check remainder range ,put in £40 worth still showing check remainder range ,it is on a charger has been for a long time prior to starting it up ,is a bit labored on turnover ,is the battery on the way out after 10years ? what should the voltage show as minimum and max .Have just reconnected it back up to the Lidl charger has been used since day one on storage no issues to date suspect battery as opposed to charger not working .Any thoughts are these faults listed down to low voltage ?
Thanks in advance

Sounds like a battery issue Brian. Whether the battery has failed or your charger has let you down I don’t know.

I’m on my third battery in 16 years

Voltage ignition off 12.38V and 13.4V with engine running.

If I recall 11.9 just about okay. Anything less not good.

Just need to use the car more. It’s August!

thanks Richard ..yes need it used more but where it sits in garage is a faff so end up taking 981 or Yeti .
the faults I mentioned are they related to low battery ie not showing any fuel in tank.?
only did about 20 miles to day to attend car show so not enough to boost it up

Brian,

It sounds as though your battery could be on its way out. I think a battery voltage of about 12.6V with the ignition off and 13.7V - 14.7V with the engine running will be about right. A battery low voltage can lead to all sorts of electrical gremlins, so if it’s 10-years old it’s probably due a replacement.

You say your fuel level was low before putting in - I assume - about 25 litres. I seem to recall from long-past posts that if you get the problem you’ve described the module hasn’t recognised the fill and you may have to fill the tank to restore the system … but I could just be talking rubbish, and that a new battery will fix the problem!

Edit: I’ve just found this post from the 996 forum but don’t know if it’s relevant for the 987.

Thanks for the input ...just changed over the charger to a newer Ultimate Speed ULGD 5.0 A1 and it is now showing 14v and 3 bars and flashing it goes up the 4 and stops flashing ...the fuel I have put in £40 of Ultimate 98 think that is approx. 26ltrs and still showing check range ,have read you need at least 40 ltrs to move it ,I think the low level fuel has nothing to do with the battery condition so 1 less think to worry about ,will leave conditioner on for a bit get to see if voltage rises.

Apologies if a really dumb question - have you acknowledged the "check range" message to make it go away?

No not a dump ? when I check range it shows -----as well as miles covered ---- where in manual does it show how to^ check range ^ Not embarrassed to say cannot see anything in book

When a car has been sitting for some time with not very much fuel in, it needs to be driven for 10 or so miles, after topping up with petrol, before the gauge shows the correct level. "Check range” is just alerting you to make sure you’ve got enough fuel to get to your destination. Again when the gauge shows the correct level, and more than very low, then that message will disappear

Will take car out and put more fuel in it and see it clears ..has been on a new charger and currently showing 13.7 and started ok back on trickle charge again at one point showed 14.1 and 4 bars so assume battery is ok ,not yet checked it with a voltmeter as do not posses one .thanks for all the replies

Update .... new battery fitted 5yr warranty 85 ah Exide Premium inc resetting all codes . not a bad life out of old one a Moll 11yrs.
also fuel gauges now working a good top up now shows 286 range.

Geo Morrison in Rutherglen ...phoned up for advise and he said pop down and will test old battery , wasn't holding charge ,had a new battery in stock re programmed car cleared any faults and reset , 40 mins later was on the road.
