Lower Ball Joint Wear?

At a recent MoT the tester remarked over the slight play in the front wheel bearings - not a level to worry about he said. Since I've changed the front discs this year I thought it worthwhile re-tightening both front bearings.

Having made an adjustment this morning (I tightened both sides only a little) I can feel play, but only when rocking the wheel when held top and bottom. Can't really feel any play when rocking side to side. What I can feel is not so great to be a real concern. I have the car serviced by Francis Tuthill and am planning on a 12000 mile service in March - the car will not cover many miles over the winter and I will ask them to investigate.

Is what I am feeling wear in the lower ball joint? Advice/opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Car has 52k miles.

Thanks.

There is supposed to be a little bit of play in the front wheel bearings - they are designed that way. I wouldn't worry.
