LOWER CAM COVER OIL LEAKS

Mears

New member
With one of my covers leaking again just 3 years and 6000 miles after the gaskets were renewed, can anybody suggest the best ways to ensure a long-lasting repair please? Should the covers have been replaced at the same time even if not showing any warp? Has anybody tried the all-aluminium aftermarket covers that are available? Is it really worth doing both sides again or better to 'leave well alone' on the sound side? There is no doubt that the bolts had managed to work themselves loose on the offending side, presumably through heat-cycling.

It used to be some years ago that if anybody had a 993 question the response, 90% of the time would be "have a look on p-car.com". Well times have changed. Nowadays the response is have a look on

Everything you could ever want to know about alloy cam covers and more.

Enjoy.

my understanding and experience is that the metal inserts are bonded into the covers and even if they are not warped they can leak from here. Replacing covers and gaskets together is a good practice.

My local Porsche Centre reckon that the covers themselves can crack and leak over time, so I replace the gaskets first, and then the covers if that doesn't fix it. I have done both upper and lower covers recently. This approach is possible, because I enjoy DIY, and have the correct facilities. It you are paying to have it done, the advice is to fit covers and gaskets at the same time.

If the bolts have worked loose, my view is that they were not tight enough. Just tightening them properly may fix your problem.
