lower rear panel rust

hi,have been looking in the vents above the sills and noted rust developing on the passengers side, just to the rear part of thr 1/4 panel at the bottom.
it feels a tad thin as a few flakes of steel appear to be coming away!it also feels,on hard pushing, weakish from the out side.
is this something, with careful application, that something like bilt hambers cavity wax can sort/stop or will ineed a repair patch?
what are your views?

It is exactly the place where 944's go.

Much now depends on how great a grip it has. The only way to cure it is extensive, and expensive, surgery. Waxoil may slow its progression but once you got it it ain't going away.

Ouch.

Suggestions.

1. I'd use the best rust-stopper there is out there. Bilt-Hamber seems to be the one that wins the reviews, and I'd be investing heavily in some.

2. Rusted sills are an MOT failure. If you have an MOT soon, I'd be pointing it out to the MOT chap and asking his opinion. OK, this may mean it fails where it would otherwise pass, but it does mean you get a professional opinion. If there isn't an MOT due soon, it may be worth dropping by your friendly local testing place on a quiet afternoon and asking them to have a quick goosey-goosey.

As I understand it, any rust can be repaired but it is expensive and time consuming. If you have found rust in this section then I'd be applying that rust-stopper (BH or otherwise) to the rest of the car as well ... the problem with rust is that it is a catalyst to the corrosion reaction (as I understand it) so once it starts to rust then the rate of progress of the rust is increased.

....are there repair sections available??

No.

The "best" way to do it is buy a replacement rear quarter panel and cut off the front lower section that is needed. This is perhaps why reports of repairs are coming in at £1500+ per side. []

had a quick scan around and found some stainless lower repair sections from clubautosport so if worst comes to worst will try these..best dust off the mig!

As John says the rear wing on that side is rather expensive, when I enquired last year it was £700+vat if I remember correctly. It's a pretty big job to change the whole outer arch so arguably best not to unless there are other problems there. I'd recommend you get someone with the right skills to fabricate the pieces necessary or to find a good used piece as a starting point.

From what I've heard I wouldn't! I'm sure Paul will be along to comment as he bought some. Genuine Porsche sills are not much dearer and will save an awful lot of labour. Be prepared that the inner sill is probably shot too, but these are cheap if a bit of a hassle to change.

oh,thanks for the pre warning!had another look and it doesnt seem as though the inner sill has gone, just a bit scabby..around 3 inches in length.

Do the sills come with the lower 1/4 section as well?

And assuming my own welding skills spectacularly fail me does anyone know of a good welder in the surrey/middlesex area?

I noticed a similar problem on my 87 220T. I spent sometime with various Dinitrol products. And now I am waiting.... hopefully several years. Amusingly, I also passed a webcam down through the sills during my investigations, so at least I know what's there now!

87 220T (lightened... ahem).
p.s. Yes, first post on this forum. Titanic was getting quiet.

Good to see you over here, Chris. I think that in spite of the response to the "I'm still here" messages on Titianic a few months ago it is on a steady decline and that isn't going to change.

Titanic is only declining because of a couple of it's members and the impossible registration process. Rob and I could have worked something out to continue to promote it, and get new members. That was spoilt by the repeated abuse from a very small minority.

It's sad to see a group losing members yet not allowing new members to join and contribute. The lessons I learned from the Titanic group are the reason this forum is always going to be open to new members. And ex-members.

And, TVR owners.....[;)]

Hi Fen,

your cambox and cam is working very nicely (in my car), btw. I had alot of fun with it at Oulton Park on Wednesday. It put a few ghosts to bed re: the reliability of my car.

Chris

I'd forgotten all about that. Nice to hear some of the few sericeable parts of the engine are still giving service.

Bit of a thread resurrect this.

Neil did you find any one to do your repair in the Surrey/Middlesex area? I have the very bottom leading edge of the rear wing to repair and I don't have the tools to do it myself.

I hear good things about a place called DJ Masters (Godalming) but haven't been to see them yet.

Cheers

James
