Lowering an S2

Hi all,

I have fitted M474 Koni yellow shock absorbers on my stock 1990 S2 and it feels like it could be a bit better if it were lower (I kept the stock springs).

The 944 S2 M474 springs specs are :
* Length : 367 mm (378 mm for the standard springs)
* Wire diameter : 11.3 mm (same as the standard springs)
* Stiffness : 23.8 N/mm (same as the standard springs)

I would like to have springs similar to the M474 springs in wire diameter, diameter & stiffness, but I would like to lower the car around 25 mm, so 378 - 25 = 353 mm < 367 mm : the original M474 springs are therefore too long.

H&R, B+G make shorter springs but the problem is that they are too stiff, stiffer than even M030 springs. I would really like to be able to have springs that have the same stiffness as the standard springs, only shorter, because I do not want the suspension to work/suffer too much on the poorly surfaced roads I can happen to drive on.

Any opinions ? What would you do if you were me ?

Thanks in advance [:)]

Techart do a set of front springs - (they may in fact be made by Eibach and sold by techart) - they will lower the front and are progressive wound so they are not too firm initially but harden up as they compress (over a shorter distance as they are lower). I have a set on my turbo and am impressed - they are a different spec for the Turbo though (smaller diameter overall and stiffer rate) so I can' t give you direct feedback for the S2.

Tony - Thanks for your input.

Actually I sent an e-mail to the french Tech Art bloke a couple of weeks ago but he answered they had nothing for S2s ...

Try some of these links Thom, I haven' t had time to check them just now but I' m sure Iv' e seen S2 lowering springs on some of them. You may need to call though to determine stiffness as it never seems to be mentioned:

Well Tony, I sent an e-mail to the adress you gave me but I received the same answer from the french bloke ...

How long ago was it when you received these springs ?

Last year, do the Konis you are using have the same size diameter springs as standard S2' s?
Tony

P.S. I know someone who has a set (don' t know if they are fitted) who is considering a full suspension change - I will send him a mail see if he wants to sell them.

ORIGINAL: 944Turbo

Absolutely, I have kept the standard S2 springs on my new Konis, they fit with no problem at all.

As Tony (Sidestream) mentioned I have a set of Techart lowering springs for an S2 which are as yet unused. £130 + postage or they can be collected at Eynsham Hall.

regards
Nick

I have the TUV document for the springs I will mail it to you both, Unfortunately my German is not up to identifying if the data is there.

With the Turbo springs they are a similar rate to standard over initial travel (for good ride) but then harden up much quicker as they are compressed further (progressive rate).

Thank you for the file, Tony.

On the sheet is indicated the Tech Art springs are 340 mm long, that' s 38 mm shorter than the stock ones (378 mm) and they expect the car to be lowered around 45 mm, stiffness considered (on a standstill I suppose).

I will measure the wheel/arch clearance on my car and keep you informed asap.

Tony

Thanks for forwarding this info on. I am somewhat busy today and am focusing on work issues.....

Nick

I have measured the tyre/wing clearance and 40-45 mm lower would definitely be too risky.

Anyway thank you for your input, and sorry for not buying.
