Hi Chaps
Do any of you folk know of the "best" type of LSD to fit to a S2.??

Im looking at doing a no of Tdays in the car + am also "possobly" in need of a gearbox rebuild as there "seems" to be some bearing noise coming from the rear of the car....
SO i though i may as well fit a LSD while "im" at the re-build.......

Any help would be Highly apreciated.......

No sorry [:(]

I haven't heard of anyone fitting an aftermarket LSD to a 944 gearbox, but I know there's a couple of you wanting to do this now. I have heard that Quaife do one. I'm sure you know this, but Paul Follet was going to get one from 9Meister for his 968 but the deal fell through in the end. It may be worth calling them [&:]

That'd be Quaife of the reputation lower than a snake's belly? Based on what I hear on other forums....

There is an attempted group buy going on over with the 968 guys...

Oh yeah I know that BUT all of the people who make 968 LSD's also do them for 944's so I'm guessing a group buy is a group buy regardless of which one you order?

Dave as you know this is something I need to deal with shortly for my S2 racecar.

968's LSD is a different design to 944's (a bit more sophisticated - Torque Sensing a la Audi Quattros, i think, so not suitable), the 944 used a plate LSD, which offers some adjustment.

Quaif is a non plate gear type assembly and seems to be popular with racers. - costs approx 750 sterling. But there is mixed opinions as to which type offers best compromise.

But you could get a 944 Turbo S/SE GBox with LSD for 500-750. Crownwheel ratio is higher as is 5th gear, than the S2. but you should be able to build a decent GBox out of all the bits - which is the way I am going.

Lets compare notes.

Technically, I haven't assessed whats involved in the strip down rebuild process, i'll do this soon.

Do all 944 boxes have the same mountings and shaft conections?

I think I might have a lux box on my turbo-

- No oil cooler

- No LSD

- First gear useless unless I have passengers, fill the boot and start on a hill,

- Spins the rear wheels in third and eats rear tyres.

The best way to correctly ID your GBox is from the coding on the box itself. Early turbos had different GBoxes to the S2 and 250 BHP Turbos.
Get me the codes off the box and ill tell you if it is correct for your car.

IIRC berg944 mentioned in another thread his turbo was an '85, so it's normal it does not have the external oil cooler as they were introduced as original equipment later.
LSD was on option during any T220 model year.

Give us the code of the gearbox and we will know for sure.

Box numbers........you will have to shout because I have an ear full of tarmac!

016301211L

L 16 5 90

BDE 4

Lux or Turbo?

Any clues to date of manufacture?

016 301 211 L is actually the part number of the rear casing ("end plate"), not the gearbox number.

L 15 5 90 : is that cast on the right side of the gearbox ? Is the L bigger than the following figures ?
If so, L is the manufacturing year (1990) and 15/5/90 is the manufacturing date.

No idea about BDE 4.

If the manufacturing date is right and if there is no external oil coolern then this might be a gearbox from a ... 944 S2.
Errr I must be wrong somehow [:D]

It has the large L

The car was reshelled in 90-91 so they could have used a new box.

That would mean it has only done 25K so I would want to keep it, I would like a LSD though!
