LSD Identification

Can you tell whether a car has a LSD just by crawling underneath it? if so what am I looking for? I appreciate that option codes may be another way of going but if it can be identified by viewing I would prefer to do it that way.

Might someone with a LSD take a photo and post it up here, that would be great.

Mine is a std coupe but am toying with the idea of a CS one day -- that is the line I am rehearsing for the good lady!

Having seen a few of Quaifes ATB diffs, I'd be very surprised if you could tell visually from the outside.

In my experience, they're the same size and shape as the standard diff, but with diferent internals.

Chris

Easy. Jack up the rear wheels, spin one wheel round if the other wheel spins in the opersite direction then you don't have LSD.
If the other wheel spins in the same direction after 40% turn then you have LSD. Also an limited slip diff won't allow you to wheel spin, especially accerlarating fast out of T junctions.

I'm not sure if that test holds true for a tourqe LSD, compared to a clutch LSD which has a mechanical connection! Also i'm pretty sure that an LSD will allow you to spin the wheels when leaving T junctions, the problem with them is that both wheels spin and you could end up doing an embarrasing 180 out of the junction [:mad:]

Stick 2 wheels on the wet grass/mud and 2 wheels on the dry road and give it some welly, if you've got an LSD then you'll still get some traction and leave a skid mark on the road too.

Can't help you wth the visual inspection, but for reference it's option code 220.

Would there be any reference to this code in the vehicles documentation or would it be traceable with the chassis no. via an OPC.

Mike

Mike, there are two stickers with the option codes on them. One inside the front cover of the service book, the other underneath the boot carpet behind the nearside rear light. On mine the stickers were missing so I got the codes from Porsche Cars GB (0118 930 3666), but they probably only have info on cars imported and sold through the UK dealer network.

When you get your car, have fun decoding the options by typing the codes into this site: http://www.kindel.com/Porsche/options.asp Great for anoraks like me [:)]

Cheers Alex,

I should have asked this before I looked at it, I'll be itching to have a peek now.

Another sleepless night [8|] only 1 working day to go .........and no finger nails or hair left already!!!

Options on my CS taken from Alex's Link

197 = Higher amperage battery
220 = Locking differential
451 = Prepared for radio for sport group
573 = Air conditioner

I assume the Locking Diff is an LSD ?? if so result ![:D]

Mike

Just been doing a bit of surfing for parts etc and came across the full list of option codes, might be of interest to someone like Paul when he's tucked up in his fur lined parker outside the local library [:D]
