Lucky escape - that little fuel hose at the front of the engine

Got out of the car after driving home from work and noticed a fuel smell. Lifted the bonnet and saw a puddle of fuel on top of the engine beneath that little fuel hose that bends round at the front of the fuel rail. I think I've been really lucky that it didn't go up in flames!
On closer inspection there is a minute hole in the hose.

Decided to check my old VW camper, only to find that has a leak between the pump and the carb. What a coincidence. That was easy to fix, though, just a length of ordinary fuel hose and clips.

So, where is the best source of a new hose for the 944 - no doubt silly money because of the special ends, or can I get one made up?

Been there Keith, very lucky, if the pinhole exits down thats better than exiting towards the exhaust manifold......

I made up a replacement using the correct British Std rated fuel hose and clips. (ebay)

(thats the hose to the front of the car that enters the engine bay at the offside wheel arch with the return hose alongside)

Hope the repair goes well whatever way you approach it. (its obviously higher pressure than the T2) [8|]

Hi Keith, very lucky escape!

I had exactly the same fault or so I thought. It turned out that the leak was actually from the front fuel pressure vibration damper - looks like the rear fuel pressure regulator.

It may be you can physically see the pipe leaking, but worth checking.

How is your idle is it rough, any acceleration flat spots or hicups?

FYI - I'm sure the little pipe you refer to was a dealer recall for an upgrade many years ago.

Also I think someone in the uk fabricates the fuel pipes and that particular one - i'll try and find the link, if not

Worth also mentioning that from my past experience with 944s, when you fix one part of the fuel system another part goes as, especially with a leak you increase the pressure upon fix and that puts a strain on another failing or weak component.

Just watch it like a hawlk especially the pipes in the engine bay.

Thanks guys. The rest of the fuel lines were replaced last year. Obviously I should have done this one at the same time, but it was all getting rather expensive!

Phoned Lancaster Colchester this morning and the part is still available, cost £53. Not nearly as much as I thought it would be.

Am I right in thinking that it is a straightforward job to do?

Just check with your OPC that it is not due a recall. Mine was replaced 3 years ago free of charge soon after I bought the car. They collected car, supplied and fitted the part, cleaned car and dropped car off for nothing.

Consequences:
FUEL LEAKS COULD IGNITE ON THE HOT EXHAUST SYSTEM, OR ANY OTHER SOURCE OF IGNITION, RESULTING IN AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.

My 2.7 got a 1/4" split putting a jet of fuel directly on to the exhaust! That is an 89 car.
