Lux differences

Hi all,

I've been trying to find this information, but I can't seem to find it consistently. Am I right in thinking that there are three luxs - '82-'85 2.5; '85-'88 2.5; and '89 2.7?

Firstly, is this right?
Secondly, am I right in thinking that the '85-'88 2.5 is the oval dash?
Thirdly, is the '85-'88 2.5 heavier than the '82-'85 2.5 (1330 kg versus 1180kg)? Are there any other differences by the way?

Thanks for your help,

Neil

Yes to all, except I'd be surprised if the weight is that much more.

There are some differences, for instance no PAS on early cars, alloy wishbones on oval-dash as opposed to cheap steel, and very late cars have ABS, so different hubs and offsets. 2.7 engine isn't greatly different but has some unique, and therefore more expensive, parts.

Main difference is whether you like the early style interior, some love it. The main thing is to buy the best car, not worry about the year, but you will spend a lot of time inside it so try both.

There's quite a lot of sensible small changes between the square and oval dash models as well.

For example, the battery moved to the boot rather then being under the bonnet (where a blocked drainage hole could result in the battery shelf rusting away). The steel fuel tank, prone to rust along the retaining straps, changed to a plastic version. The windscreen wipers actually go the right way for a right hand drive car. Little things, but worthwhile.

I'm also amazed at how dated the early dash models look compared with the later dash ones.

I know they are all 20+ years old now, but the later ones hide it tolerably well. Early dash models look to be every bit of that 20+ years when you are inside them.

(This is not necessarily a bad thing and many will like this. I can certainly understand the appeal. I guess it depends upon how much you value 'perceived modernity'. FWIW, comparing an early 944 dash with a VW scirocco dash of the same era shows a lot of similarities in style, and some would say the shape of the car overall isn't that dissimilar either. And the Mk1 Scirocco remains one of my favourite cars.)

Oli.

I spent my time looking for a later oval dash simply because after 3 924's I wanted to feel like I was a different car, I know the dials are yellow but they all just felt like I was inside a '24.
But yes thats right about the Lux model time line
