Lux restoration - what colour?

Hi guys,

Hoping to canvass some opinion of colour advice.

My '86 Lux is about to go in for a fairly comprehensive bodywork restoration. I've had enough of having bits done at every MOT and am going to bite the bullet and try to sort it out once and for all. The guy doing the work is having a lot of the interior out, the engine out and the back axle and gearbox off too. Because the whole car is being painted he had suggested that I can pick a new colour.

It is currently Sapphire metallic. I've gone through several ideas from a dark blue metallic to Titanium but I'm not sure these will suit the Lux.

I'm now swinging towards a light shade such as Crystal metallic with very dark gunmetal/black wheels (Cup 3, 17"). I realise that this is not a colour which was available on the '86 cars but think it will suit quite well.

Unfortunately the car is garaged some way away from me at the moment so I've not been able to get any pics on here for the photoshop experts.

Any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hey Ian,

...how about 'Bright Pink' for starters? lol [:D]

Seems that most cars nowadays are silver'ish (mines Sapphire Met too). Not that i was bored, but whilst sat in the Asda car park the other day, we counted 10 different silver'ish cars coming in and out in the space of 2 minutes!

Firstly - have you been talking to my wife? Pink was her suggestion.[:D]

I know what you mean about the silver thing but I still think it'll look quite good. Especially with the dark wheels. I reallt like some of the dark blue colours but I'm not sure about how they'll look on the Lux.

Well if you went for Guards Red you would end up with the requested Pink in a few years anyway. Failing that any of the others suggested would look great imho.

Hows about the Golden Yellow that the Renault Megan sports are painted in....Fab colour....

Or TVR RedBull blue.??
If you doing a colour change, may aswell do it properly....

Hmmm..... not sure about that.

Just trawling through the colours on the thread here on the forum.
Think I like the Horizon Blue metallic in Zia's pics at Porscheshop.

Is that the colour you had on your 968 Dave? - nearly made you an offer on that, but doing this instead now.[:)]

....but ooh that RedBull Blue is nice[&:] Never have chosen a car on colour alone before. Proving to be difficult.
I figured that it would be best to stick with Porsche original colours.

Now, now - we get enough of that from Fen![8|][:D]

Understood.

Just the idea of restoring the car makes no financial sense from the outset.
I've gone through the stage of deciding to get rid of the car by now.
Next stage will be an engine swap when I can afford.

I've only decided to do this work as I've realised I'd rather spend the money and know exactly where I am with the car than start again with a new one. Quite attached to the car too by now.
... Trigger's sweeping brush comes to mind[:D]

..but point taken

Otherwise known as the philosopher's broom. I wondered about this with LIL, first you renew the engine, then the body, is it still the same car? [&:]

I tend to think that a full colour change is tricky, essentially you'd need to completely strip the shell to get it right. Now, if that's the plan then a dip in a galvanising bath wouldn't be a bad plan!

If you're going to change it, then I'm going to suggest that there's no bad colour in the original Porsche range? Admittedly rubystone is a bit of a "Marmite" colour, but it's genuine and rare. I'd go anything but silver, but that's why I have a faded red 944, a fading turquoise Toyota van and a Legacy in Mica Green, the softest paint known to man that scratches if a leaf lands on it. []

I'd keep it the same - largely as it's close to one of the best colours anyway so why take on what will be some additional work and risk making the car less desirable in the future.

Azurite blue is a non-metallic dark blue; what the trade calls "doom blue". I'd imagine it would devlaue the car as much as white would have until a couple of years ago.

If you are going to change then something really different would be my suggestion. I actually quite fancy a Rubystone car. There's a 968 coupe for sale here in Rubystone which is pretty cheap, not that I want a 968 coupe, but if it was a cab (and not tip-chronic) I might take a look as S2 cabs are like the poo of the rocking horse here (and I don't believe there are any Turbo cabs) and it's the time of year to have a "roof to go down" as a Cornish mate once said.

I think you have to be a little careful with colours, the early cars have a relatively limited palette of colours that look right to me. Yellow for example can look great on an S2, Turbo and 968 but just looks wrong on an early bumpered car. However I'm really not sure if this is related to the cleaner look of the later cars or just a personal prejudice for whatever reason? [&:]

However, I say go for whatever you like, you'll regret it if you don't and there's nothing worse than a big bill and buyers remorse [;)]

Ian.
Yes my 968 cabrio was in Horizon Blue. Lovely colour...
Its now gone to its new home down south.....[:D][:D]

Sapphire metallic is a pretty unusual colour already, you don't see too many around so I say keep it as it is.

First of all, I'm pleased to read this:-

"My '86 Lux is about to go in for a fairly comprehensive bodywork restoration."

Secondly, i agree with Paul Smith, your car looks great in your avatar in its original colour. Keep it that way, it will make it easier for the painter (and possibly cheaper) as he can leave sound areas of original paint- eg the inside of the car.

Thanks guys,

Lots of good advice there. Maybe I am thinking about a change of colour more because I can. Maybe I should have a think about whether I should. I do quite like the colour that it is now but a change might be nice - would feel a little like having a new car. Never gave a thought to the fact that the colour is a little unusual already though.

I definitely agree with Peter about some colours looking wrong on earlier cars so there is the risk that the finished article might just look wrong. How gutted would I feel then?

The whole thing is going to need to be painted anyway. There aren't many panels with sound paint anymore thanks to the tin worm, the fact that the local bin wagon has destroyed a front wing and someone has kindly keyed the other side. ...... oh and I now need a new driver's dor cos someone tried to get in with a crowbar a few months ago[]! Fortunately we're soon to move house and the car won't be returning to me before I have safe off road parking.

As an aside - it's good testament to the strength of the doors that there was only a buckle in the pillar. A Corsa I used to have was broken into just by someone getting their fingers over the top of the door and bending the whole thing out.

Still pretty undecided then. At the moment it's keep it the same or Horizon Blue.

Definitely black wheels though....

.....matt or shiny anyone? [&:]

Take the hint and go 'mint'

I have and its very naughty.........dont think It will have the same effect on a Lux

My Lux was Sapphire with a deep lacquer, a colour that has class.
