M&K single in - dual out muffler

It has been like Christmas in my house as I have been eagerly awaiting my new M&K silencer. It took about 3 weeks to make (this combination is not something they carry in stock) and about 3 days to land on my door step. With the exchange rate as it is, it made the import duty less painful...... yeah right![]

I was feaful of it being too loud for every day use and decided to request a bolt in cap to go in the right hand tip and therefore closing it off (thanks for the advice Richard) which I haven't even put in yet to test it out.

I'm not too sure of any improvement in mid range torque or better throttle response - it sure sounds quicker [:D] - I will get a dyno result in the new year to send to SW to see if he can squeeze a few more ponies out of it.

I guess the main reason for this pre Christmas self indulgence is to change the sound of the exhaust note. It goes without saying the sound of a flat six on full song is something to be admired and it has certainly got better around here.
At idle it has a much deeper and louder burble. It is very driveable at 2,500 - 3,000 revs almost to the extent that you quite easily forget what is about to come. when you get to 5,000 revs all hell breaks loose and up to 6,750 it simply screams [:)]

So, is it loud - yes
Is it too loud - not even close.

Glenn, - Good to hear from you. I think we need a side by side comparison - let me know when you are free.

BTW is that your other mode of transport on the left of the picture?[:D]

That, my friend is an open top, three wheeled, Barbie fireblade with pink tassels - only used at weekends and special occasions

now I can see why you cut your rear valance.!!!...thought that you were contemplating fitting an intergrated additional low level high output fog light [:D]

Hope it sounds as good as it looks. This is one thing that has always bugged me with the standard 3.2.....one poxy exhaust pipe. One thing is the look which does not do the car justice, and the other thing is the sound which is so much better with two.
I'm tempted.

I'm going to try and attach a link - but first I need to find a free video hosting website....

I think there is a sound file on Ben's website.

John Glynn also has video of my car on the dyno - but with 2-in 2-out and SSIs.

Right, lets see if I can get this right. click here for a sound bite.

The host I am using does not allow sound files only, so I have added in a picture to make a WMA file. (Glenn, yes that is you driving - you can tell because it looks slower than my laps [:D])

The muffler sounds much better than in this file. When driving and at high revs (4,500+) you get a much more agressive sound which is slightly more tinny - it's a shame you can't here it in this file

Jacob...sounds great..I want one, where do you buy them from, did you fit it yourself, or did you take it to an exhaust shop. Was there any faffing about, or was it a direct fit (with a new seal no doubt)....As said above, you obviously need to cut the right hand side of the valance first!

Alan,

You won't be disappointed if you buy one - they sound awesome [:)]

I bought it from M&K exhaust in the states. Ben is very customer focussed, professional and eager to please. With the exchange rate as it is you could not buy better in the U.K (IMHO)
I fitted it myslef and it only took about 30 mins. (all the nuts and bolts were relatively new and easy to get off/on) Cutting the valance was easy. See here for some details.

However, I would not buy the stainless hardware that Ben sells - the bolts are too big (I think 10mm) and the strap is too small to fit around the muffler and fixings.

Hey guys check out my posts in the dyno day thread. After some investigation I went down the Hayward & Scott route, manufactured and fitted by them at their factory in Basildon, Essex.

Great quality T304 stainless and a fantastic service. The guys on the dyno day said the sound was awesome especially the popping on the over run (I had a straight through pre-silencer)...made really good numbers as well.

If you're looking for a UK system I would recommend them without hesitation.

At a guess, Ben's muffler is not much more than half the cost of an H&S muffler. You can do your own cost benefit sums.

The best sounding 911 I have ever heard was on an H&S system with SSIs - but is it worth the money???

Fair point Richard, but I doubt whether there's much in the price once you've paid shipping from the States and H&S fitted mine for free.

The good thing I guess is that there are several quality products out there to choose from. Nice to see the marque well supported.

jacob - yours sounds really meaty, not what you would expect from a 3.2 at all. I am hopeful of getting a decent exhaust note after all ...

however .... er, did you mention pops and bangs on over run twinny? [:D]

once I find the car, one of the the first things will be to sort the exhaust out.

What sort of ball park would I be looking at to lose the cats and put bypass pipes in, then fit a decent sounding freeflowing exhaust, ideally with twin pipes at one side (if they do them).

I come from a de-catted Ferrari with a Tubi, so volume is not a problem [;)]

ORIGINAL: twinny

Just under £800 for the H&S sports system fitted, including the cross over pipe.

That's not too bad, in fact, less than half the price of a Tubi!

You could do the M&K silencer and sports pre silencer for around half that and fit it yourself.

How is your search going?

My system had only been on just over 2 years (stainless) and the bolts had to be cut off with a burner. I would have stood no chance getting the old one off lying upside down on the garage floor.

Taking the old one off, including the crossover and fitting the new system took around two hours with all the right gear and a ramp. I just watched and drank tea! Money well spent to my mind.
