M030 questions

Hi Guys,

Hope everyone is doing ok.

What is the difference between m030 fitment and the x series fitment shocks vs stock? I'm not asking the difference in rebound, shaft length etc, I know they are slightly different on each model, it's the actual fitment. They all look the same to be to be honest, standard threaded shaft at the top and same mounting on the bottom?

I've heard about different mounts needing to be used, but I don't understand why this is the case if the actual shock fitment is the same.

I lowered my car by 30mm, had the geo done, and even with standard spec shock mounts it could be adjusted to the right level.

Any ideas?

Hmmm, mountings and struts look the same to me, with exception to the bottom plates on the front shocks, they seem to be at different angles to each other, but this can be catered for in the slotted adjustment and camber / toe options available on the front end set up anyway.

Not concerned with the roll bars, drop links, bumps stops or anything else, they can all be swapped out to please, so just the actual shocks.

The shafts will all be the same thread, the fixings to the mounting on the hub all look to be the same (and they are generic parts as are the mounting points on the car body so makes sense).

I'm still trying to work out why for example the top mount on the kits should be different. If they fit the thread, the spring sleeve and top mount secures firmly on the spring and the shaft fine (which it will do) then why are they different? The only reason I can think of is to allow for more of an adjustment margin. Example, a spring that rests at 30mm lower on a standard mount shock on the front (gt3 example) will almost likely result in negative camber and sometimes slightly off toe and caster angles on standard units. So a mount that is already somewhat adjusted to sit more natural at the lower ride height will require a less dramatic adjustment on the car itself (IE you won't max out most settings to get an acceptable level and willl therefore allow adjustment either way).

But really other than that, I can't see any difference for the average user.

I guess what I am trying to figure out is this, if I bought M030 shocks, or infact X series or turbo shocks (forget poundage and pressure, purely mouting points) in theory they should be able to be fitted to any other model.

I've been doing some work on my own suspension recently (have replaced standard shocks, with standard length shocks but using lowered springs for more comfort), and my friend has M030 and also wants to replace with standard shocks. I heard some people say the top mounts will have to be changed. But I can't see any reason for this. His car is aprox 15mm lower than stock with m030, mine is lowered 30mm and is adjusted fine. Therefore I don't see the need for him to change anything if he just slotted non M030 in with his M030 springs.

Roll bars are exactly the same on m30 and X74.

I have the m30 setup but with lowered springs, this works just fine but the problem with lowering standard shocks can be that it wears out quicker because it's not using its full range. In theory if you lower by 30mm then you have 30mm less travel on the shock than intended.

Have no idea how much of a problem this is in real life though...

Interestingly I found out from the OPC, that the M030 OEM kit isn't actually classified as M030, the suspension is M003, the M030 is the sports package 'with sports suspension.

Porsche call M030 the "Sports-Type Chassis". The Sport Package was M014.

M"00"s are usually reserved for vehicle versions.

M001 was the Cup car, M004 is the GTRS (Street), and M005 was the GT3R. Not sure about M003.

On the 993, M002 was the RS Road Version, and M003 was the RS Clubsport.

Edit: Streather lists M002 as the GT3 Road Version, and M003 as the GT3 Clubsport, which would make sense.
 
I was all geared up to have this done by Chris at Center Gravity who have contacted Porsche and there are no kits available, they have been told to contact them again in August!
 
I ordered a kit in February was told it would be with my OPC last week, chased it this week the guy on the parts department, said he had put a ticket through which is an email system the only way they can contact Germany to track parts and they haven't got back to him so he was hoping for delivery ths week, but I chased it today and I haven't had a reply. When ordered it my aim was to get it on the car before Classic Le Mans and thought this would be no problem being February, now with Three weeks to spare before we leave it's getting tight, and becoming hard work.

I ordered mine from Dicket Lovett OPC about 5 weeks ago, I was told the ETA is end of July for kits to come back into the UK,.
 
M030.

It looks like I'll have to put up with the rattle from the droplinks for longer than I thought!
