MAF again.

Is anyone running a NA car with the Deutsche Nine MAF kit? The website says it is a Bosch system.

I've been deliberating for a while as to whether the 944 stays or not as I've been having albeit minor running problems and she is in need of some body work TLC. The running problem - runs rich at idle and can be hesitant to say the least at 5k and above - really bad flat spot (at times). Roger at Promax suspects the AFM may be responsible. If this proves to be the case then I may be in for a new one costing around 500 quid. I know that Roger and Andy used to supply a similar kit but no longer do so due to probs running them on the 944.

All this depends on whether I feel I can put all the necessary money into the car so a little advice would be appreciated. I've been looking at several cars to do the work of the Volvo and the 944 together - i.e. be reliable and cheap to run, quick and make me smile (not alot to ask![:)]). Nothing has yet done this enough to persuade me to change. Plus the depreciation on a newer car negates half the incentive.

I have a Maf kit " now spare" that was fitted to my S2. I originally bought it from Promax...
I found it ran great, with better throttle response than the "barn door" AFM...

Like i said. This MAF kit is now FOR SALE...Call me if you OR anyone else is interested... 07514 944968.

I attended a dyno day in Germany some years ago when these MAFs came out and an '86 NA made a corrected 160bhp instead of its factory-quoted 150bhp (if I remember correctly it was some kind of "special" model that was only sold back then in Germany and Belgium, with fewer bhp).
I have not driven a NA with one but if improves drivability as well as with an S2 or turbo I would go for it.

I like my SciVision MAF, it's on an S2 but I suspect the benefits will be identical on a Lux. The throttle response was the big plus making the car feel years younger, so if you're only faced with buying a new AFM or MAF for around the same price then it's a no brainer.

However I really wouldn't recommend buying something this expensive until you've 100% proved it's the problem by substituting a known good AFM. If you do go for the MAF have a look at the Vitesse one too, it's a more sophisticated system and price is competitive (plus John at Vitesse provides exceptional customer service).

I have exactly the problem you describe on my 968. My local specialist thought it might be the MAF but wasn't convinced enough to order me one (can't get them on sale or return) so I bought an exchange unit from www.jdsporsche.com.

Good price and great service. John Speake is the chap's name. Best to e-mail him.

Made b*gger all difference to the rich idle etc though...[]

Next likely culprits are the ECU or a fuel pressure problem After that we run out of ideas. It shouldn't be fuel pressure mind becasue I had the injectors serviced recently. I'm having ther ECU sent away for diagnosois next month. Apparently most ECU faults can be repaired relatively ecnomically whereas replacement costs the proverbial arm and leg.

That seems like sound advice Peter. Anyone got a known good AFM I can try?

Can your garage not help? Mine would either have a spare or with the owners consent borrow one for 10 minutes from another customers car when it's in next in, could be tricky to arrange mutually convenient times but surely worth a shot. I do have an S2 AFM here, but I bet it's different from the Lux's one. Failing that why not have a look for a cheap one on ebay, it may be in questionable shape but the chances of it exhibiting exactly the same faults are likely to be pretty slim I'd have thought, you should then be able to off load it back onto eBay when you've finished with it.

James do you know exactly where it is being sent away for repair?

ECU problems are coming up more and more as our cars age and it would be nice to know who can repair them

It might be jdsporsche again but I'm not sure. When I take the car into the garage (Hillcrest in Nettlebed nr Henley) next month, I'll ask and post on here.
