MAF breaking down..?

Hi all
Hoping for a bit of advice - just had a very minor service (oil & filter replacement etc) at a local independent Porsche specialist & they have advised that the MAF is starting to play up. I bought the car from an OPC & it is still under warranty until May '10 - is this something that would normally be covered under the terms of a used car warranty or would it get "lumped" together with tyres, exhaust etc? Would also appreciate another explanation of what the MAF does - is this why there is sometimes a very slight pause when accelerating hard? & what happens if it is not replaced?
Many Thanks

I would have thought it would be covered under the Porsche Warranty, but I would also be worried that you have voided it by taking it to an indy for a service.....

The Mass Air Flow sensor measures the volume of air going in to the engine, and uses the measurement as part of the data to adjust the air/fuel mix. The symptoms you describe are typical of a failing MAF sensor. Generally speaking, if you have done more than 50,000 miles then the MAF is living on borrowed time.

Blimey, that's progress! The 944 MAFs are becoming a regular issue, but that's after over 20 years and on average well over 100K miles. If things keep progressing at this rate a new MAF will be part of the annual service. [&o]

I thought that the EU had made a directive preventing manufacturers from insisting that service must be performed at 'approved' centres (otherwise creating a monopoly) and that as long as original parts were used all was OK.
Have I got that wrong?

I believe that refers to the manufacturers warranty. Does anyone have a policy booklet they check? Also if anyone could scan it for me to add to the FAQ page it would be really useful. http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=232940

Many thanks for the replies, I'll try my luck for a new MAF at the OPC.
To be honest I don't think they will notice that the car has been worked on by anyone else - I took it back for a very minor coolant leak last summer & they replaced all the radiators - it turned out to be the coolant reservoir cap that needed replacing to the latest type!

They use a standard Bosch part common to many cars so shop around. A friend of mine with a Boxster got a quote from the OPC which was ridiculous. He sourced the part himself, it took about 20 minutes to replace and he saved himself a bit of beer money.

Here are the numbers for the 3 types of MAF used on the 996:

Porsche Number - Bosch Number
996.606.123.00 - 0280 217 007
996.606.124.00 - 0280 218 009
986.606.125.01 - 0280 218 055
