MAF Sensor... advice?

Hi all,

Another question, as normal, Richard maybe you could help... again..? please haha!
When I purchased my car, nearly 12 months ago I immediately had it checked over with a complete clean bill of health... actually it was described as outstanding, the only thing that was picked up was a possible MAF fault... incidently I bought one (which Richard H confirmed as the correct one (e-drive 3.4) - thanks Rich) same numbers as the old one that I replaced. Anyway, the immediate result was the same... generally stable idle as before without A/C on (the norm) and stable idle / slightly higher revs with A/C on... so I expected better pick up, took it out for a drive, appears OK but when changing from say 3rd to 4th, as I release the clutch im sure I feel a very slight / tiny judder... just for a 10th of second, maybe slightly more jerkiness...
Has anyone else experienced this or am I being paranoid. By the way I would have the changed the MAF sooner but I only use the car on weekends so its never been a major issue...

However, this is playing on my mind... any thoughts?

I may pop the old one back in... tonight and test it.

Hmmmm... i've just read my post through...

All those who think paranoid? (yes i know its a flat 6 and supposed to have a different running character)

 
If it's any consolation, mine will hesitate occasionally when it's tickling along in 2nd in slow-moving traffic. I'm not worried :rolleyes:
 
Probably not relevant, but I've just had the MAF replaced on my 2.5 Boxster. It was very flat accellerating through the 3000 - 5000 rev range.

Now it goes like stink and it's made a huge difference. I've only had the car for six months, so it's probably always been like it - now I have an even bigger smile on my face!!! [:D]
 
Chris - If I were you I'd go to an independent Porsche specialist and get them to do a full diagnostic check. It will only taks 10-15 minutes, and it should show if there are any problems.

If you are anywhere near me (Maidenhead, Berks) email me and we can sort something out.
 
For the time it takes, it would also be a good idea to reset your DME (disconnect the battery for a half hour or so). This can make a big difference and ensures the electronics re-calibrate correctly to the new MAF sensor.

Im sure its something daft... Ian I will disconnect the battery if you think it'll make a difference (what does DME stand for?) Richard... i'll email you shortly on the situation, thanks again... as it only takes 10 - 15 mins to run a diagnostic do you have an idea of cost roughly, an average that I should expect to pay?

Finally - On a different subject, ...starter motor, does anybody have a picture of where it is located on the engine.

Very handy for some Richard! [;)] Well im phoning the specialist today in hope that he can check it over tomorrow... I placed the old MAF sensor in yesterday, idle appeared to be the same but on releasing the clutch whilst changing from 3rd to 4th, no problems at all - smooth... hmmmm, odd! Maybe the new sensor is faulty...

Right guys... heres the analysis.... car was found to be OK... after the check over at the specialist (it was just me [:mad:]) yes, you can all laugh at me now!

BUT, and it is a BUT! whilst driving home the 20 miles from the garage during the rush hour... after 10 mins of good driving, I had the pleasant experience of being sat in traffic, never noticed until about 10 mins into this traffic that my temperature gauge had reached something in the region of about 92 (needle pointing at the right handside of the zero of the 80 mark or a mm past it, when it normally fluctuates around 82 or left hand side of zero on the 80 mark...) obviously once i began moving briskly it naturally dropped slowly back to its normal area.

Is this the norm... Porsche Guru aka Richard do you have any answers..? Guys, any thoughts?

Once home I sat on the drive with the spoiler raised to see whether the fan would kick in, again it reached 91ish after 10/12 mins but the fan failed to kick in,.... at what temperature does it kick in? (at this point the down pour deterred me any longer staying outside, and could not be bothered to move cars around to put it in the garage... hence why Im on hear seeking some advice (again)

Any checks etc...?

God, i'm beginning to break into cold sweats over this now.... or is a case of LAUGH AT ME AGAIN?
