Mag Alloy Refurb

An old one I know - BUT can anyone recommend a good company to refurb Mag Alloys. I have had two sets done now and both of them have 'spidered' within 6 months. Obviously I will mention no names! I want to get my track set done over the winter so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

David

I had mine done at Autofarm over the winter of 2005 and they also corrected a buckle to 3 of the rims at the same time.

Finish is perfect and there are no signs of finish problems with them.

Cost was approx £130-£140 per rim.

Cheers

Ollie

Thanks chaps. I have been in contact with these two in the past, just not used them. Third time lucky................

I have an alternative based in Nottingham, who'll do a brilliant job but for far less than the prices quoted above (he's done stuff for me, I'm fussy, and I'm more than happy with the results months later).

Let me know if you need/want contact details.

What finish was put on them? Was it clear lacquer or powdercoat? I can't imagine properly applied powdercoat "spidering". Are they really magnesium?

I have had two sets refurbed by Diamond Styling and can only say, they are fab, but a tad expensive.

However, I also know many people who have had less than satisfactory longevity from what appeared to be a good job.

And I also know people who have has their wheels etched to oblivion !

Since these wheels are now selling for around £2000 per set in half decent conditon, I reckon the Diamond Styling blasting and painting approach is favourable --- I wouldn't allow an acid bath anywhere near any of mine. But there may be others who do what Diamond styling do .... ?

And yes, they really are Magnesium Alloy --- that is Magnesium and Aluminium.

I realise that genuine Cups are magnesium, as are some early 911 Mahle wheel that I refurbish, it's just that David had not been very specific as to what rims he wants to refurbish, Many people incorrectly labels aluminium rims as mag-alloys. Obviously it very important to know the alloy when stripping and machining rims.

Well at least there is one other who realises you gets-wot-yer-pays-for!![;)]

Diamond Styling gently bead blast the rims to remove all paint and corrosion. The wheels are then put on an ex Rolls-Royce, Crewe, lathe that turns at 25rpm. They can also 'weld'/fill any imperfections. They did some kerbed split rims for me last year and you could not see the join, except for one deep gash and that was only visible from one foot away!!

My slicked up set of Cup 1's will be off to them early next year, and they're gonna be white!![&:]As original......

For what its worth, Diamond Styling did my mag wheels last year and apart from a few small paint runs the finish was ok (not great). After about 3 months they started bubbling which wasn't good. To be fair to Gareth, he didn't hesitate in taking them back to be re done but I think results are variable.

I had my wheels done by Diamond Styling before bringing the car to Oz and I have to say I a disappointed. Because of their reputation and the belief that the wheels are hard to get right, I wanted DS to do them rather than risk finding somebody in Oz. However, the paint has rippled in a few places and I obviously cannot take them back! It seems to me that since the business changed hands, quality has been more variable. However, I have only heard good things about how they deal with problems.
