Mags Alignment

New member
Had a puncture Sunday and am in the process of getting new boots from Silverline. I thought I'd read somewhere that the tyres on the magesiums have to be lined up with a red dot somewhere on the rim? Can anyone shed any light on this or am I smoking dope?

I think red dot on tyre lines up with valve.

While you are there, ask them for a response to my e-mail.......

Originally these cars had the end of one of the 5 hub studs painted Red. The valve goes opposite the stud with the Red dot.

I've seen many of these now where the Red paint is all but gone. Yours is so low mileage though that the Red dots should hopefully be there. Ignore any Red dots on the tyre if indeed there are any there.

THAT red dot -it's so long since I've seen one, I've forgotten!!

Thanx RSR, quite correct.

This sounds similar to the method used if you are using locking wheels nuts ie locking wheel nut opposite to the valve (I think there was actually an order you were supposed to do the studs up in) - presumably because the locking wheel nut on each wheel replaced the red marked item???

Is this something to do with the weight/balancing of the wheel or is there another reason for doing this?

Yes, it's all coming back to me now (well, it's been three years since I had a car with red dot on stud.)

It's red stud next to valve with locking nut on it....I think..........

Mind you, I don't think it's made an ounce of difference how the wheels are fitted on current car!! [:D]

Paul, of course it was you I'd seen it from originally....I'll check asap.....whats the downside in the meantime....terminal at all?

Mel ur right for older cars but on 993 onwards its red spot opposite valve .........never had a 964 dont know when it changed??

Yes the answers in here alright.

If we were assimilated like a collective group of BORG we'd have said this:

Stud with Red dot opposite vavle, then put the locking wheel nut on the Red stud. As Yoda said it's all to do with balance.

....and you know comparing the other forums I think for like minded individuals (a la Borg hive mind) and activity, interest, support advice etc etc etc this one takes some beating......so glad I got an RS.
