Mainbeam indicator

My dashboard main beam indicator has stopped working - at first thought it was just a bulb in the dash, but I notice that when I turn on the lights the indicator illuminates briefly as the light unit pops up - but only if the dipped/main stalk is on dipped!!

So looks like a relay problem or a crossed wire somewhere.

Any clues anyone?
 
Is it a pre 85 944? If so one of the switches behind the gearstick turns this light on and off. Or at least does on my car :D.
