I am haveing some terrible issues with my new to me 944. Thinks I may need a new engine but firstly I need to explore all avenues of thought. So where can I obtain an workshop manual for this animal. Seems like Haynes don't do one.

Haynes do a very thin one which in most peoples humble opinion is not very good. Have a look at Rick Cannells site, he's on this forum as eastendr (no spelling error) and his site is www.cannell.co.uk

Yup, as Hilux said, what are the problems? What is the model and what are the symptoms?

Between us, I think that people on here have experienced most of the known problems with 944's ... so ask!

Sorry for the delay in replying. my problem is that I now have to do an engine change. Spent £318 on getting the head faced, welded and the valves relapped. Installed head and guess what, still have the same problem, water in the oil and water pouring out of the exhaust. I rather suspect block or liner damage. The engine looks like someone has spent a fortune on rad sealer to pass the car on. The previous owner (well known to me) has offered to pay part of the repair costs. I have sourced another engine for £300. I Just want to be aware of pitfalls in changing this breed of engine. I have my own vehicle workshop so ramps and tooling are no problem.
 
There is a water/oil cooler exchange thingy (others will be along in a minute to be precise about it) on the side of the engine that can lose its seal and you get a lot of oil in the water.I assume this is common to all 2.5 litre engines.

It is totally removed from a head gasket issue however water in the exhaust is worrying and may suggest a liner issue?
 
Thanks for the speedy reply. Dare I say that Mercedes share a radiator with an auto gearbox cooler and sometimes you get water in the ATF when they burst. With my beloved (manual gearbox) I dont know where the heat exchanger (if that is what you are refering to) is.
 
I believe its on the front offside of the engine, the bit the oil filter fits onto (dont quote me though)

Someone else a better description?
 
sorry to hear about your 944 project gone wrong,you and me both squire!
i used to have an xj6 4.2 and thought that was a moneypit!
the only thing the voice of experience has taught me is 3 things
1.fpsh
2.fpsh
3.fpsh
 
Unlikely on a 20 year old car. I would further suggest that, these days, OPC mechanics are less qualified to work on 944's than those independents who were trained by Porsche when the 944 was new.
 
I have invested in a replacement engine. That was the good news. Can I get the timming right?, can I hell. I get everything ligned up and fit the cam belt. Check its all in line, turn the engine by hand a couple of times and yup, its out by 5mm at the flywheel mark. Start again, check check and double check. Everything ok and turn engine by hand, timming out again. Is there any leaway on timming. Read Clarkes Garage Manual about 10 times now. Help is required, any offers of tips etc?

Don't be too dismayed. I changed the Timing belts on my 2.5 and I have to say 5mm is not alot (on the flywheel circumference). You could actually have it right, but you need to hear from some of the more experienced folk on the forum. - If it's wrong then 5mm is alot.[8|]

I should maybe keep quiet, and I don't mean to bring confusion, but I did the set-up 3 times always trying to improve it and I never got it to what I'd call millimetre perfect.

Tips from memory:
Plugs out
Cam aligned
Crank aligned
Tensioner retracted - to minimum amount to allow belt to fit
Fit belt (ensure ribs in belt are "meshed" on Pulleys)
Introduce Belt tension carefully
Torque tensioner securing nut.
Check.
When checking - the direction of rotation is important. I forget if its CW or A-CWise (Sorry)

I found the Balance shafts more of a pain to align.

George, thanks for the reply, it has given me hope. Tomorrow the engine goes back in and I will try it. What can I lose? The car is very good, no rust etc and has all the toys. It will be reserected! I bought this car on a whim. Previously ( many years ago I owned a 911Taga) Ok so its not quite the same league but it has similar characteristics. I had forgotten how much fun they could be.
