Major Vs Minor service

Hello, can someone please tell me what work is done during a major and minor service please? Cheers, Dan

I had a minor service at my OPC, and was told it was a 'VISUAL check and report' no actual work done unless it is identified as a problem.

I was advised that for a low mileage 3.2 two minors should be followed by a major - ie no oil change/valve clearances etc for 3 years.

Don't know who gave you that advice!

I cover 3-4k miles per year and alternate between a minor (which for me is basically an engine oil and filter change) and a major each year.

Leave the engine oil and filter alone for 3 years? - no thanks.

Dan,

I think that most people would classify a minor service as being an oil and oil filter change plus a visual inspection of everything else. A major service as a minor plus air filter, spark plugs and checking and adjusting the valve clearances. The correct schedule is to do a minor service at 6K or 1 year and a major at 12K or every other year. As a lot of people do fairly low mileages in these car then they tend to alternate between a minor one year and a major the following. You should probably also get the brake fluid changed every other year. I also had the gearbox oil changed in mine since owning it and that was also worthwhile.

I use to have a 1989 911 Speedster which was maintained by PCGB (at Reading) for 7 years out of the 14 years I owned it.

The car use to average around a 1000 per year and PCGB were more than happy to just do the minor service each year and change the brake fluid every 2 years. They assured me that the car only needed the major service every 12K miles and not every 12 months.

Needless to say the car never missed a beat, I saved 100's of pounds by not over servicing and did my bit to save the planet at the same time [:D]

Just checked my service book.

Minor service (6k miles) is listed as engine oil and filter for turbo models only.

I'm very happy to continue with an engine oil and filter change annually and a major service (effectively the 12k schedule) every other year. Frequent oil & filter changes are definitely most important for long engine service life.

Plugs, cap, rotor, fuel filter & air filter will be fine for 5 years.
Oil & filter every year unless you only use the car 2 or 3 times a year.
Brake fluid I would do every two years unless you only drive the car 2 or 3 times a year in which case 5 years should be fine.
