Making Horsepower

Just relaying some info from Titanic List regarding horsepower gains from mass air flow conversion and SSI exhaust backdate. Rob Van der Poel was testing an FVD mass air flow kit and he has SSI backdate exhaust on his 3.2 Clubsport. He reported:

" By the way, after my questions to and answers from you all, I,ve tested the FVD air mass meter on the dyno and despite the huge power gain promise, it only gave 8 BHP and 2 NM of torque. I could hardly notice any difference on the road. The air mass meter will be returned to FVD. The clubsport engine (mine std was dynoed on 238 bhp and 285 NM) gave with the SSI exhaust system 248 BHP and 290 NM. This combined with the lighweight car is enough to outrun 964' s (except RS !) so no need for the mass meter for me. This car is the most rewarding sportscar I have ever driven."

As you can see Rob' s Clubsport engine was in a good state of health to start with. The SSIs were worth 10hp and 5nm and the mass air flow 8hp and 2nm.

More useful info for the HP junkies that I picked up off Rennlist:

" A good sport muffler like the Monty adds modest power on the 3.2' s, but the biggest gains come from using a 3-into-1 header or heater exchanger system AND that the sport muffler.

The OEM Carrera 3.2 heat exchanger design was not optimized for power; it was intended for emissions compliance and using the SSI or a header system (1 5/8" ) is much better than the OEM system. Combined with a dual in, dual out muffler, that presents the biggest potential power gains from an exhaust upgrade.

All things being equal, SSI' s and the Monty muffler adds around 15-18 HP to an otherwise stock Carrera. A set of 1 5/8" headers will do even better, overall. Make sure than any system you might buy has the oxy sensor bung on that left side.

Whether its worth it is truly dependent on your budget and your power objectives. Certainly, its one of the prerequistes to getting measurable HP from these engines.

Does anyone stock Montys in the UK?

Richard

I reckon Bert can tell you as he has a set of SSIs for sale right now. At retail, say, £800 for SSIs plus oil lines plus back date heater plus installation and a Monty is around USD800, for Dansk around £300 plus VAT. I imagine very little change from £1400-1500, maybe more, if you go with Dansk back box and more again with Monty.

Hi Richard - I' m very interested to make contact with Rob, but havign a " mare" of a time trying to subscribe to Titanic. As you may know, I work in support of the CS register and am right now building the internation DB of CS owners...so contact with Rob would be great.
