Making the change!

Hi everyone. I've been thinking about changing from my 996 C2 (MY 2003, 19k miles, Seal Grey, manual, fully loaded) to a 997 3.6. I've had the 996 for 2 years now and the experience has been fine, I'd just like to have something a bit more modern looking inside - and benefit from more up to date R & D, of course!

Have any of you made the same move as I intend to?

Are there the same pitfalls with the 997 as with the 996; RMS, etc.?

PASM or no PASM?

Slate Grey or Atlas Grey? (the two colours that I'm looking at.

My budget is probably going to mean that I'll buy privately - I'd prefer that anyway, as my experience of the OPC purchase and support has been good - but not worth the extra cash you have to spend to get it!
Any thoughts that any of you might have on this would be welcome! Adrian.

If I were making the move from 996 to 997 I'd go for the 997S, simply because it offers a step up in grunt, braking, grip, spec & has PASM.
I made the move from 996C2 to C2 facelift & wished I had gone for something that felt "more different" e.g. the Turbo etc!
The standard 997 is a similar driving experience to the 996, same performance, although clearly better by degrees with the new interior & exterior etc! RMS is still an issue, but less so, each year passes the problem gets less!
Go full fat get an S, or go driver focussed & get the standard car with the sports pack/suspension option & PSE!

I am with grant here, there are two ways to go. By a C2S or C4S - there a big step up in terms of the overall car and preformance - they come as standard with PASM and Xeno headlights. To my mind two absolute must haves for long distance work

Or if you are just going to sue it fro a backroad beast for half hour to hour blats around the contryside I go full on Sports suspension, Sporst seats, short shifter, sports chrono plus etc on a C2. It won't have the grunt fot he C2/4 S but will be more agile.

The only point I disagree with about Grant post [;)], I've found the driving experience to be leagues ahead with the 997, the thing that finally made it worth the upgrade was the front end bite and feel that the 997 offered over the 996..
Nothing wrong with the 996, just saying Porsche did move things on. [:)]

Hi Gary. Thanks for your input. But whether it be 997, or indeed 997S really makes little or no difference when it comes to.....well you know what! In the words of Eric Idle......"What's it like..?" Adrian. (P.S. Any correct replies to this (media) trivia will be bombarded with more and this thread will go on and on! So bring it on!!)

nudge, nudge, say no more...

I switched from 996 to 997S a couple of years ago (wth a Boxster S in between) and agree that the step change in performance is difficult to ignore. I loved my 996 and had no complaints with it, and the 997S has been great as well. PASM yes, and sports seats if you can. Both the greys suit the car but personally prefer the Atlas which I nearly specced on my own.

997 certainly feels more up to date .atlas grey is great[:D]as i chose it .meteor also lovely
agree with the other boys here in the upgrade dept to 997 s or 4s .personally i found them both excellent and big improvement on my 996c4.ended up with excellent cayman s with pasm and xenons -as tom says both essential IMHO.recently test drove 997 TT and am totally smitten[:D]

Thanks folks! Keep your advice coming! It looks like I'll have to find some extra cash down the back of the sofa. It's definitely going to have to be a private buy I think! Albatross!!

Do you know what, I've been reading this forum as a guest and member for probably 18 months now and I've avoided asking this question for fear of being ridiculed but here goes...............TT? I assume one "T" is for turbo, but what about the other? Tiptronic?

TwinTurbo[:D]

Ciao Julio!! I've always assumed that it stands for Twin Turbo - as there are two of them, one for each bank of cylinders. I think that I'm about to feel a huge sense of embarrassment coming on!! It's been nice knowing you all! I'll get my coat, etc...... Can you imagine - a 3.6 flat six with a blower on each bank of cylinders + four wheel drive + everything else that comes with these beasts! One day...! Adrian.

[] OMG he's opened pandoras box now..!!

Julio, I'm pleased to see you've been shown the errors of your ways [;)]
Original Turbo's were a single unit with Porsche moving onto twin Turbo units in later models....

I feel so embarassed. I've always considered my self a bit of a petrol head and never knew recent 911's had twin turbos. Always thought it was 1 big one!

I have gone backwards. Had a few 996's then a boxsterS then brought a brand new 997C2S in March 05. Absolutley gorgeous[:D][:D][:D] but it was all too easy, felt abit like a GT car instead of a sports car, it had no foibles or soul[8D]. Kept it two years and got bored, so bought a 996TT x50 in March this year, yahoooooooo[:D][:D][:D].

It looks fantastic, rides really rough and goes like an exocet missile! So far have done 4,500 miles since March, shredded a set of new rear tyres and I can't keep out of it! My Missus thinks I am a new man![;)][;)]. The only other car I would now consider is a 997 GT3!

Actually beavergraig makes a fair point, the 996TT is worth a test drive, amazing value at the moment, I loved mine for nearly 4 years, then again I enjoyed a 24 hour drive in the 997S..... fabulous car, but I just couldn't loose the ultimate grunt!!! As you haven't become addicted to the TT gruntfest the 997S is still a great choice, but definitely worth taking the TT out for a spin!

hey beaver, lovin' it... get yorself a sports exhaust, your car will sound like a missile too...

I was even told by an OPC salesman recently that TT's demand is currently very high and values of 2003 cars around 50K have slightly increased in value over the last 2 months....

Never come across that before Astonishment !!!
