Manual or Tiptronic???

I would appreciate your advice and comments as to the differing driving experience between tiptronic and manual.

I understand that it will finally be down to personal choice but:

Is it correct that the manual version offers a better driving experience in the 964?
What are the benefits in each case?
Does it make a difference to residual value as most Tiptronic's seem to be 1k or more, less than manual?

As you say it is personal. I know some very happy 'tip' drivers including my wife (who drives fast btw). If you do a lot of town/city driving the tiptronic is great. Its is fun too. However it has to be said for the real driving of a 964, I prefer manual. The clutch is offset and heavy sometimes.

Please drive both before you decide , you may find the tip a god scent or manual much nicer. It is true tips sometimes are cheaper however if you get a good colour, history spot on , and lots of work done there is no real difference. Obviously on a tip you won't have to think about replacing clutches!! Bonus as it is not cheap.

Good luck

Hi - Obviously the Tip is easier to drive - does this detract from the driving experience, or does it allow you to focus on the road ahead and the actual driving, with less distractions.... Common opinion says the former, Schumacher's Ferrari suggests maybe the latter [:)]

One difference I have not heard discussed is that the Tiptronic (pre 996) has only four gears, the 964 manual has 5, and the 993 manual 6 speeds. 996 Tip has 5 speeds

I spoke to someone on a track day with a Tiptronic 964, and he said that he was sometimes caught between gears on particular corners, too slow for one gear, but too fast for the next gear down.

I've driven a 996 Tip, and found that I could really concentrate on the driving (always a good idea in a 911) and it would change up at points that I would not have - just after the apex of a wet corner for example (I'm not a massively aggressive driver, but like to drive as fast as I think I can [:)])

Others obviously find any automated driver aids a complete ananthema, and love the full control and involvement of a manual - horses for courses really

I would say that you need to drive one to find out if it is for you - obviously if you ask the question you are not in the "over my dead body" camp, so give both a chance

Having owned a 993 & 996 Tip in addition to manual versions, its all down to personal choice.

I felt that the 4 speed 993 Tip was missing a gear IMHO, I did test drive a 964 Tip and felt that it lacked something...... as someone has said drive both back to back before you buy.

Thanks Everyone

As usual excellent points and feedback.

I will indeed drive both as suggested but your opinions and experiences have been a great help!
