Stick with your heart until Porsche move onto the DSG equivalent system.
Also depends on what you use the car for, as I use mine daily for business, the Tip is fantastic...much more relaxing to drive.
However when I want to play the buttons on the steering wheel do provide lots of fun []
Very much personal preference, I would try both from a dealer on the same day and see wha you like.

I always view the Porsche as a drivers fun car, so therefore would always plump for stick shift...I love the feel of the industrial short shift change on the GT3, its such a big part of the experience. I have a daily drive as well, which is an auto so I am quite fortunate. I really dont think I could buy a tiptronic 911, just seems alien to me somehow!
I suppose in 'my world' ( a very strange place at times! ) I view a Porsche as the car to use when I want to really go for a drive, in which case it just has to be a manual for the full experiance. I really dont think I would have a Porsche if I was doing a lot of driving/commuting in it etc, think something like a nice Auto Merc would do the trick. It almost seems sacrilege to me to have an automatic Porsche, but like I say thats just me,no offence to any of you tiptronic chaps out there!

I have owned both.
As other have said, it depends on how you are going to use it.
You cannot get into a tiptronic and fully connect with it on a short test drive, goodness knows how the press do..![&:]
The tiptronic reads your driving style and adapts to suit, a blatt out in the lanes and it hangs onto the gears and happily goes towards the redline, clever enough not to change on corners etc... Yet through town it shifts smoothly and quickly.
It was a hard choice for me this time round, certainly not an easy choice to make. In the end I went for a stick this time as its not used as a daily city car...

They said not on the 996 but you had to be quick and consistent to be quicker than it all the time.
Dylan, It seems your test drive was better than mine.. I was left wondering after mine.....

I can fully see the benefit of an auto in motorway or town/stop start driving, my father in law has an auto & it is very relaxing to drive, easy, comfortable, smooth, I like it very much!
But he doesn't own a sports car, a driving machine & I cannot see any circumstances at all where an auto is as good to drive as a manual when pressing on over your favourite B roads! It simply does not offer you the control, response or interaction of a stick shift.Even my other half agrees & she isn't a press on driver, she had a Boxster S tip as her courtesy car ( her usual steed is manual) & disliked it.. a lot!
Of course as ever it is down to what you want in a car & the tip is certainly the more relaxing option, so as ever it comes down to your own opinion.... after an extended test drive!

Both my experiences of tip have been disappointing, both at Millbrook and on a test drive of a TT a couple of weeks ago. There's just no fun in it for me, however advanced the gearbox is. My view might be different if it had flappy paddles instead of buttons to shift, which imho would at least give it a more involved feel. My new order is in & it will be coming with a short shift stick. Best advice is to get your self down for a back to back test drive of both before you finally spec. If you've already put down your deposit get on your Porsche experience day. Push your dealer to get the date, if I hadn't I'd probably still be waiting a year after delivery.

I bought my C2S with a manual shift after trying both for a day or two (not long enough I hear some of you say). I have a question for those who use/prefer the Tiptronic: if you hold the steering wheel in the 'conventional' 10-to-2 position, how do you operate the Tiptronic rocker? I found the hand position necessary to position the thumbs over the rocker to be quite uncomfortable and awkward for fast/accurate steering and could not get accustomed to moving the hands down quickly to make a change. As you can tell I'm not a fan but note: wouldn't life be boring if we all wanted the same thing? My final thought is: Tip is probably the best solution for a daily driver in heavy traffic.
I hold the wheel at 9-3, my left hand thumb does all the changing.

I love automatics and must confess to actually quite liking the Porsche Tipronic offering, despite its retro 5 speed cogs.
Cant quite bring myself to spend £100+k on the ultimate 997 and then spec an auto on it, even though its faster etc.
Prejudice more than anything I think.
