Manual Quick Shift Kit

I'm thinking of retro fitting the quick shift gear mech to my C2S. Has anyone else done this and is it worth while ?Everytime I've popped into the dealer, they never have a car with one fitted, so I'm interested in peoples comments.

I was advised that they are terrific but, when the engine etc. is cold, can be difficult to use in first and second gear.

Everyone I have spoken to has advised that a PSE is the best after delivery accessory!

 
As correctly pointed out.
The short shift can be a bit stiff/snatchy when cold, however when your having a good drive out it really does feel right.
The 1st to 2nd does get easier as the gearbox warms up...

As per Gary's comments - Short shift is fab, some people find it difficult because it is much more definite/precise - because of this 1st and 2nd gear can be a bit stiff when cold. In reality this is because the short shift loosens up much more directly linked to the oil temperature than the standard shift - ie if 1st and 2nd are stiff the oil temp is too low for hard shifts, once the gearbox oil is warm its a really direct and sweet shift. 2nd to 3rd is like a rifle bolt action and is very satisfying.

Going back to a standard shift after getting used to the short shift is a bit of a disappointment - the change feels vague and imprecise - it is that good but the price is the gearbox oil has to warm up first before the great changes works properly.

I think Bolton OPC are doing a deal on the short shift at the moment, worth a phone call [8|]
 
i echo the comments.

£ for £ I think the short shift is one of the better options.

I prefer the shorter shift travel - should be standard fit really!!! but we all know how P likes to charge extra.
 
Thanks for the comments guys. I'm not worried about the extra stiffness when it's cold, mine is a bit tricky for the first, second gear change of a cold morning anyway, even with the standard shifter. I find blipping the throttle between the change makes it engage easier.

Bolton's a bit of a trek but Solihull are doing it just over £400 fitted, which I didn't think was too bad.
 
How about a nice carbon shifter to go with it?

Agree with the other comments that a short shift and PSE are must haves for the enthusiastic driver. The Short shift can be bought as a replacement gear lever assembly from porsche for about 220 pounds, then the fitting is about andother 2 hours. The short shift unit comes complete with a lock bridge to fix the lever in the correct position when re attaching the gear linkage cables. A cheaper option is to fit the short shift kit design used on the 996 / 986 which involves only replacing the lever and re using the original housing. This is a far cheaper option and gives identical results (throw movement and feel) the only downside is that the gear cables must be marked before being disconnected and fitting the lever results in the original bearings being destroyed in the removal process. A lock bridge for the standard shift mechanism costs only a few pounds and ensures the cables are perfectly positioned before disconnection. As a result of destroying the original bushes to fit the ones with the kit , there is no way of going back to original unless you buy another new or used standard shift mechanism. The kits can be bought on e bay for as little as 50 pounds , are well made and include adjustment of the lever stifness (something the OEM 997/987 short shifter does not posess).
 
my 06 997 C2S had the short shift option and it physically would not go into 2nd when cold, this is a oil viscosity / syncro issue exacerbated by the short lever,

now sold (thank god), after sitting unused for 3 weeks the battery was 100% flat, in contrast my 1979 mint VW camper which started on it's own battery after being stored for 2 1/2 years in a barn, and thats technoligical advancement !

The travel at the bottom end of the lever should be the same for either option , its the top part of the lever where you lose the leverage. The gearbox should not be "locked out" for a specific gear as a result of the shorter throw, just require a little more effort. If the cables are not aligned correctly and there is insufficient travel across the gate , I can imagine this could cause bigger issues and the kind of physical barrier others have described . The early 997/ 987 gear cables are prone to failure and have a number of redesigns , perhaps those with the severe issues with gear selection are experiencing problems as a result of stretched cables ?

I loved my shortshift and never had any 'cold' issues with it but really never got to grips with PSE. Actually preferred the stock exhaust !

I liked both a lot initially but kepy the quick shift and went for an after market exhaust. My quick shift can baulk when its very cold but as soon as the oil is warm the change is sweet as irrespective of outside temp.
