Marks on headlining

The black headlining on my car has white marks on it which are not coming off. I have used Autoglym leather cleaner (which is also suitable for vinyl if that's what it's made of) but it has not worked. There is no dampness in the car, and I do not have a sunroof. Has anyone else had this problem, or knows how to get rid of it? I don't see it when I'm driving, but I am getting sick of hearing the kids in the back going on about it!!!
