Matter 1/2 rollcage DIY?

Would it be possible to fit a Matter 1/2 cage in 964 RS Lightweight DIY? Is it necessary to weld in some threaded nuts into the rear seat bowls on the RS? Is it possible to fit the cage without damaging the carpets and seatbelts etc? I 'm really looking to be able to remove it, if necessary, at a later date with little or no sign of it being fitted. Does anyone have any instructions as to how to go about installtion?

Most (but not all) roll cages are designed to be either welded directly to the body with a load spreading plate or bolted to a welded in plate. There are a few types that mount to seat belt belt holes. These may not be as strong as a "proper" installation. Heigo i beleive do such a cage. If you go for the real thing and have either a bolt-in with welded plates or a fully welded in cage your carpet around the plates will be history. You will simply have to replace it with an equivalent. it's easy enough to remove either cage type and carpet over the remaining plates. Many people don't even realise they have them !
So for diy the heigo is the easiest option. next comes the bolt in for which you will need good welding skills if the plates are'nt there already and the ssame goes for the fully welded in cage. It's also worth while to note that the bolt in to plates option may also require some of the tubes to be welded also.
As far as i understand Matter built several designs for the 964 & RS and was the factory installer for the clubsport cages and C4 RS cage (which was a bolt-in to welded plates design) as well as supplying after market designs. Matter is afaik no longer trading.

Autofarm fitted a Heigo bolt in half cage to my car a while ago and had to add strengthening plates to the transmission tunnel mounting point. 2 nicely welded in plates were installed and then covered in a protective coating to stop any penetration of moisture etc from getting between the two surfaces.

They also added strengthening plates to all other mounting areas of the cage.

My car has a very basic Matter half cage. It bolts to the lower B-post seatbelt mounts and to the outer lap belt mounts in the rear. It has no cross bracing, but it is fully TUV approved (I doubt it would have been full FIA spec though). As it was in the car when I bought it I haven't seen fit to do anything other than leave it in place. No doubt it is not as rugged or substantial as a full factory cage, or even a Heigo bolt-in, but it's got to be better than nothing !
So in short, if you are able to pick up one on these cages (eBay.de most likely source), then yes it is an easy DIY install with no damage whatsoever to interior trim (other than poking through the carpet to access the rear lap-belt mounting holes).

Didn't Matter go bust several years ago? So, that wouldn't be an option now. I gather Heigo is the nearest option.

Hi Chaps,
I have an original Rear Matter 1/2 cage fitted, which bolts in.
I am interested in buying the Front bolt in section, to make a full cage, if any one has one for sale??

Cheers

John, 9m have a chap who worked for Matter who now does the cages for their 9m64/93 cars. I believe he has all the original measurements, or whatever he would need, to make the cages.

May be worth a call to Colin or Marc!?

John it's about time you had the full cage feel.........9M ask the Fencemeister! Did a lovely job on the 64RS Clubsport Copy with a Matter look alike, while you are at it, get it stripped out and go M003.......they look the businees in Colmans Yellow...there is a local guy to me, who is often seen out posing....[;)]

Desmondo,
Thanks for the advise.
I think your idea of ripping all the interior out, is great one and will certainly help its value[&:][&:][&:][:D]

Yes John , the 964RS forum is the place to come for advice on improving the value and performance of 993's ( and GT3s ) [:D]

A fully welded Matter would be impossible to do without stripping it out.

To be serious ---- I have visited the workshot at 9M and seen their welded cages being fitted and welded --- it is a work of art ensuring that the stresses are even and that the car is straight at the end of it. (And that nothing pings !!)

Hence their interest in the chap that used to fit them for Porsche ...

Thanks to Chris - Marc at 9M painted/fitted the Matter cage plus fitted 6-point Schroth harnesses. He did a perfect job.

Hi,
The best in my opinion weld in custom made cages are from GTR Motorpsort in Wokingham.
I have had one done in my 3.2 carrera and fits perfectly where it touches. I have posted some photos before so can add some again if required. Ask the chap who has a 964 RS Touring with a cage recently fitted by GTR.
Kind regards Ian

Good timing Ian.....

I have had my car (the RS Touring Ian mentioned) back from GTR motorsport now for a few weeks. The cage is a complete work of art. It almost makes the rest of the 'Porsche' workmanship look sub standard. And..... I use the car daily!

Roll on the first track day........................

I still have my brand new Heigo rear cage if anyone wants to buy it?

David - rolling's NOT the idea! [;)]

Superb it's all worked out alright. I'm very pleased you went this route. The worst should never happen but the protection is there - but cages do look purposeful and suit the cars.
