Hi All,
Because this thread had veered off topic and got political I have decided to remove all non relavant posts. Those that wrote them will know which ones.[;)] I have posted another reminder in our "Off topic thread"
I'm sorry if some are offended by my action but I have a life to get on with and not spend it monitoring this thread.
Now get out and enjoy your cars![:)]

LEADING THE WORLD IN BRAKE DISC TECHNOLOGY[/b] PRESENTATION[/b]
Guest Speaker, Malcolm Macnautan's - Group Technical & Research Manager at
www.eurac-group.com

Malcolm had offered to Alan Kennedy, that he would come along to one of our Porsche club nights and provide a presentation on his business. The presentation would educate members in not only the manufacturing process, but also the properties a quality brake disc can provide. Malcolm took us through a stunning Power Point presentation called Automotive Brake discs "" all you ever wanted to know and more! From telling us where all the Manufacturing Sites are that make the discs many of the OE Customers sell on to us for all our makes of car.
BMW, Mercedes, Mazda, Lotus, Ford, Bentley, Audi, VW to name a few "¦.."¦

Going on to share how the company began, and more importantly why were discs developed?
Discs were developed "" 1 - Cars going faster, 2 - Relatively poor efficiency of drums, 3 - "¦. prone to fade and grabbing caused by distortion during use. Malcolm then provided a great slide of a Ferrari Dino 246 SP brake system developed way back in 1963"¦"¦"¦"¦.
Also well known racing cars that used these products such as an 1980 Ferrari 315T5 and a McLaren MP4 raced in 1983/4. He shared that they produce 5 ½ million discs averaging 5 to 6 kilos per year; which runs in at 50,000 tonnes / year capacity. 100% of the discs made are ventilated discs. Malcolm explained that the brake discs were "A safety critical component" just look at this example "" Heat example, a 1 ½ ton car going from 90mph to stop would create 240Kw.

Also that Product design is so different, dependant on the cars power, weight, wheel and tyre size etc"¦"¦. Type of disc utilised depends on several factors:-
1 - Vehicle performance, 2 - Weight, power, 3 - Available space and 4 - Wheel dimensions and type

The Production Process - How cast iron brake discs are manufactured at Precision Disc castings and the job starts in the Charge melter."¦ then transferred to the autopour"¦. Core boxes and cores"¦. Core production"¦. Cores ready for moulds"¦. Automatic pouring"¦. Cooled"¦. Knock out"¦. Automatic fettling"¦. Inspection"¦.

He also explained some of the Alternative materials?
n SG iron
n Compacted graphite iron
n Carbon composites
n Aluminium
n Cast iron / aluminium composites
n Ceramic composites

We were all pleased to hear at the end, that we were welcome to go along to a factory visit later in 2008. We joked that we might not bring our Porsche's along as Karl had warned us all of the "quality by-products" the process puts out into the local atmosphere!

We all applauded Malcolm's very professional presentation.
