Mayonaise in oil filler

Had an oil warning light appear on dash this evening and then checked oil and there is little in there so checked the oil filler cap and its got quite a lot of mayonaise gunge in there :(

Mayo is very common in the filler tube. As long as there is no oil in the water, or vice-versa, don't worry. Sounds like you need to keep an eye on the oil level, though.

There is nothing in the water and the car is performing as it should with no noises or loss of performance of any kind.
It doesnt look like there is mayo throughout the tube, only at the end where the filler cap screws.

very common in the 996. I had an original 3.4 996 which had the same problem. I dont find it in the post facelift model though., I wouldnt worry and some oil use is normal. What year and engine size is yours ?

Gave me one helluvva shock too, the first time I saw it but, as Richard has said, it's pretty much routine. Short trips (e.g. down to the shops and back), esp. during the winter, is a good way of causing it. Decent runs, good temperature, and generally when the weather's warmer, and it should disappear. The oil filler pipe is long so if the car's only used for short trips it's unlikely to get warm enough to dispel the condensation built up in it, hence the water/oil mix (i.e. mayo) develops. There can be "geniuine" reasons (after all, mayo around the oil filler cap is a tell-tale indicator in most cars), but it really is typical with the 996. It's quite a common query so you shouldn't have much difficulty finding more information elsewhere about it. I would keep an eye on oil, though (check the dipstick rather rely on the dash display).

Mines a 03 plate 3.6.
I have cleaned the mayo away and will see if it comes back.
in reality however i do only work 2 miles from where i live and 95% of my journeys range from taking my sons to school and childcare and then too and from work so journeys of 2-4 miles at a time.

Fatal - mayo is a cert'.

I get the same, but only do a couple of miles to work. Everything is fine with the car, so as above a 'feature' of the 996 !

I found mine was really bad over winter, loads of mayo.

But since the warmer weather (and a 1,000 mile blast to Germany) I have almost none now.

My car uses about 1 litre of oil every 1,200 miles btw.

That's a lot. Mobil 1 0W-40? Try using a thicker oil (5W-40) next time it's changed. It might help.

Yeah, Mobil 1 0W-40. Will Porsche OPC use a thicker oil if asked when it is next serviced ?

I am sure they will be happy to use any of the approved oils on the list in the Technical Articles section. If you ask them if you can supply your own you will save a few quid too!

I seem to use a lot of oil, around 1 litre per 1200m
I was told by my supplier to continue to use shell helix ultra 5/40 (very costly)
